Advantages: Lots of info
Disadvantages: Paedophiles and perverts playground
The way the internet is these day, I will be very reluctent to let my daughter on the internet. Sure, she's 7 months old now, but I gotta think about her future. The internet is a playground for paedophiles and perverts, and I will do what I have to do to make sure that my daughter doesn't end up another victim. Even with parental controlls on my computer, I typed into a search engine "Childrens clothing stores" Innocent enough eh??? You would not imagine the ammount of porn I got. Why the hell would I get all of that? It's outrageous. I know that shes gotta grow up sometime, but I'd like her childhood be a happy one. Even chatrooms are no better, I've seen men old enough the be ashamed of themselves, going into a chatroom saying "Any kids wanna chat" Very dubious. The thing to kids and the internet is they are gonna wanna go on it, all thier fave toys, programmes etc all have sites, and they'll wanna see it. I used "Net nanny" and that want 100% porn free, it always get in. I think that you should use the internet at your disgression, sit next to your kid while they surf, it might be a great way to have fun together! The internet needs a good shake up, get rid of the pervs looking for kids, let's make it a nice place for kids to surf, instead of fearing for who they're talking to, or what they're looking at. I know when my daughter is old enough, I will explain all of this to her, and hopefully she will have enough common sence not to meet anyone, or give out any details to anyone. And hopefully the laws for the internet will be stricter, and more enforced.

- 10/07/01 OK, I couldn't resist and went to google. First time I`ve ever used it.
Must admit, I was expecting the word "free", not entered as part of a sentence-search, to present me with pages of porn. Not a bit of it.
"clothing stores" children uk
....provided a good list of clothing stores here though.
There IS a filter. To the right of the main page's search-bar is a preferences link. The filter on/off options are the 5th option down on that page.
Given the lack of porn I found, I was expecting to see the filter ON, but it was OFF.
A while back, the word "free" typed into an unfiltered AltaVista would've provided more porn URLs that one could look at in a lifetime.
Curiou s; but google seems to be filtered even when its filter is off. |

- 09/07/01 That IS very odd. I wonder what we're doing differently then. As far as I know, there are no filters here. I haven't put them on anyway. How strange. |

- 09/07/01 Try these search engines:
http:// www.hotbot.lycos.co.uk/in dex.html
http:// uk.altavista.com/s?r=1 (turn family filter on this one)
("clot hing stores" +children) turned up no porn on HotBot.
Always type precise phrases, INSIDE quotation marks, that way you're targeting what you`re looking for more precisely.
Child rens clothing stores WITHOUT quotation marks is effectively 3 different searches FAR more likely to turn up `nasty` things.
1)Childr en(s) (VERY dodgy sites)
2)Clothing (Probably soft porn sites)
3)Stores. (Including porn stores)
Otherwis e, I'm sure there are awful chat sites, but in my experience paedo`s don't frequent the large, well-monitored ones. |
