Advantages: Good competitive prices
Disadvantages: Very limited range
Compass Marine is well known amongst sailing enthusiasts for its competitive pricing (not hard to do given the apparent "if its got boat in the title add 40%" pricing policy here in the UK) and decent own brand items. A comparative price picked at random from the current catalogue and compared to Cruisermart Express (Yachtpeople.com) by way of example, was the Iris 50 Compass: £29.95 from Compass, £34.95 from Cruisermart. No contest really. Carriage also makes interesting comparison. Compass charges £4.95 regardless of weight, whereas Cruisermart and others use a sliding scale according to weight. A recent purchase from Compass of a 15Kg anchor, GPS, mooring lines, 8m of chain, 30m anchor line, horn and various bits and pieces arrived in several parcels on different days, but still only cost £4.95 p&p in total. However, Compasses main drawback is it's limited range. In the same category, using the latest catalogues for both firms, Compass had only 3 types of handbearing compass to offer, whilst Cruisermart offers 11 different models. The above order from compass also arrived in 5 different parcels on different days over about a month, which is a curious way to do business because presumably it must cost them much more. One item ordered was out of stock for about a month (though I was informed of this at the time of order, so that’s fair enough) and another was missed altogether until I rang to enquire (the operator had apparently not recorded it when I rang the original order in). These minor inconveniences apart, if compass has the very item you are looking for in their catalogue, then you will be most unlikely to be able to find it cheaper elsewhere in the UK, and for me personally, that's the major issue. Would I use them again? Yes.
