Advantages: Inspiring trends
Disadvantages: Sometimes slow
If you're cool like me then you might want to check out coolhunting.com. This is a site for all those who want to stay ahead of the neighbours in terms of the latest arts and crafts, gadgets, technology and interior decor. The site does not sell the products on view, but provides links to sites were the designers can be found or where the products are sold. Josh Rubin founded Cool Hunting in 2003 as a way to catalogue things that inspired him as a designer but it later developed beyond a personal reference tool. There are now designers and consumers from around the world that visit the site regularly and increasingly contributions come from visitors.
The site takes the style of a blog format with regular quality posts. There is usually at least one new article published each day, but sometimes there are three of four. The articles are concise and well written and cover a range of subject matter such as information about comics and books, art galleries and exhibitions, trendy style items such as hand made kimono cases for your iPod, designer furniture, bicycle accessories and fashions from New York and Tokyo. You can even find stuff about cool food such as custom made ice cream, chocolate thongs and organic frozen yogurt for you pooch.
Apart from the articles there are regular product videos posted daily. The videos are usually interviews with artists and designers talking about their creations. The website is nicely laid out and well organized as you might imagine for a design site. You are not visually overburdened with advertising. It has a friendly interface and home page that welcomes not just those who are geeks. A good way to explore the site and perhaps find things that you're interested in is to click on the useful archive link at the top of the home page. The only drawback to the site I've found is that navigation can be rather slow at times, possibly due to the excessive use of flash content.
At the bottom of the page there is a section devoted to member recommendations in the form of picture links. You can click on one of these products and be taken through to www.thisnext.com - a related product page where you can read a short review about the product and vote as to whether you want to wish for or recommend the item. You don't actually learn much about the product, but you can find some interesting and novelty items here.
If you're tired of looking in the Argos catalogue then I recommend you to check out coolhunting.com.
Summary: A well designed website presenting inspiring trends in culture and fashion.
