The Coventry University student portal has come under consistent reworking and tweaking to try and improve it but it still fails on many levels. It is easy to set up as a student and there are plenty of people willing to help you. I found the whole process fine to deal with. The website can be accessed and logged into on campus and off it easily.
The homepage is cluttered with endless links and information so you often don't pick up on the more important information as it gets lost within it all. The layout looks poor and untidy. On the plus side, it doesn't take long to load as the graphics are kept to a minimum, which is good for students wanting to access their work quickly without fuss.
I find the headings confusing, they don't indicate what lies within. For example when looking for my results, I have to click on something called 'SOLAR'. I only found this out from clicking all over the place and eventually found it through trial and error. To me this is just poor and typical of the portal. There are seemingly endless terms to remember like 'SOLAR' and non of them are clear as to what they are, despite holding important information. This often makes me feel confused and lost, which is just frustrating when I'm trying to find information when I'm working on coursework or revising for exans, I just don't need the hassle of it.
If you can't find the information you are looking for, there is a search function, clearly located at the top right of the screen. I found this to be lacking and it didn't seem to recognise a lot of what I wrote, returning useless, irrelevant links. What's more it isn't clear as to what the links contained. Adding to the frustration of the experience.
Once you find the information however, there is a wealth of it available. Everything you could want to know regarding the University is on there somewhere, it will just take you ages to find it, unless you get lucky. The pages containing student's work is clearly layed out and it is easy to navigate. The information contained on these pages is entirely upto the lecturers, they determine how much and what the upload to these pages and consequently the standard of these pages varies considerably. They are usually of a good standard and the lecturers are easy to contact via the pages if needs be.
There is a shop on the portal, which is also incredibly poorly made. The layout is poor and the content is minimal. There are plenty of categories that are available to browse but there aren't many items online to buy. The shop takes all major credit and debit cards and loads up quickly.
The IT support team are friendly and react quickly to any queries you may have. They are however making constant changes and maintainence to the website which often disrupts user use of it. I'm sure these tweaks are needed and they are essential but I can't help thinking a new, modern website would eliminate these disruptions a great deal.
Overall the portal contains a great deal of useful and essential information, it's just difficult to find as the website is confusing and too cluttered. Aesthetically, it is not pleasing on the eye but this also means pages load quickly as they are graphically minimal. The whole website needs an overhaul as it looks and feels very outdated, it needs making more user-friendly and modern.
