The CWGC or Commonwealth War Graves Commission was established by Royal Charter in 1917 & has the following principles:- 01) Each of the dead should be commemorated by name on the headstone or memorial 02) Headstones and memorials should be permanent 03) Headstones should be uniform 04) There should be no distinction made on account of military or civil rank, race or creed As with any large undertaking like this, records have been kept detailing the work that the Commission has done and the development of the internet has allowed these records to be placed online. I first came across this website about 6 months ago when i started to research my family tree and discovered that i had a great great uncle who died in the First World War but no one knew when he died or where he was buried. All we knew was his name. (Thats what gave me the family tree 'bug'). As i found out the hard way (via the national archives) most First World War army records did not survive the blitz of World War 2 and so without all his details it would be impossible to see if his records had survived. Commonwealth War Graves Commission This is a site that has wealth of information on the War Graves of the Commonwealth and other interesting sites that are linked to the CWGC. It tells you how the commission is run and by whom and how it is controlled. The jewel in the crown is the database it has on every serving person that has died in conflict. By inputting the Name and service they were in plus any other details that you may know it will find and inform you in what Commonwealth War Grave they are buried and some additional information.
