Cyndi Howells is considered to be an authority on genealogy on the Internet. She started her site up in 1996 (I think) listing genealogy sites on the Internet and it's recently had it's seventeen millionth visitor. Like Rootsweb, she's kept it very basic. Plain background, plain text, very very low on graphics so it's fast loading. It CAN be confusing for the new person as it has such a wealth of information so it's imperative that whenever she says "Read this first", you read that first. Cyndi'slist is a great site. It tells you where to go on the web to find the information you need, and how to do your research. It's nicely laid out and informative. The main problem I have with the site, is I only found it after several months of researching my family tree, when a site I was visiting linked in to it. When I am researching geneology I am not going to type in "cyndislist" to a search engine, if I don't know that the site exists. Cyndi's list is the definitive genealogy database. If you want to research your family name, this site should be your first stop; it contains over 73,000 links to genealogy sites around the world. Cyndi places the links into the main categories of geographical, alphabetical and topical sections, and further indexes them according to their specific subject.
