Advantages: Free, large range, previews available, easy download
Disadvantages: None
Dafont.com is one of the Internet's most popular websites for downloading fonts. The fonts are all free, which means you can download to your heart's content, and they are compatible for both PCs and Macs.
It's worth remembering that unless you're in a strict professional environment you need never pay for a font - even buyable ones and trademarked ones usually have a free version available that has such tiny differences you wouldn't notice, but it's enough to escape copyright infringement.
The site is very easy to use, and you can browse in a number of different ways. If you want to see if a particular font is available, you can enter it in the search box...if you can remember only the first letter or so, you can browse by each letter of the alphabet individually. Or, you can use the simple navigation to search by author, see new fonts, etc.
Once you've navigated to a font you want to download, you can enter some text to preview what the font will look like. This is particularly useful to see if a particular title you want to use looks nice, or to see how letters join up or look alongside each other.
Underneath the preview box, each individual character of the font is shown, so you can see what symbols and accented characters exist in that font, and things like punctuation etc. which are sometimes missed out.
Once you're ready to download your new font, just hit the download button to download a .ttf (true type font) file. If you're using a PC, all you have to do then is simply drag it to your Fonts folder (inside the Control Panel) to install it.
Remember that if you're using custom fonts on the Internet, if the person viewing it doesn't have that font installed, they will just see a basic rubbish one, so you might be better off making images which they will be able to see.
Overall, a fantastic free resource with no strings.
Summary: Fab resource for your font needs
