Advantages: free advice, great content, easy to navigate
Disadvantages: makes you feel hungrey, put on wieght, eat too much
Over the years I have collected many many cookery books, which after a few times of being open while you are mixing and preparing food, become dog eared and splashed with food and after a while look very grubby so are pushed to the back of a cupboard just to take up valuable storage space and cause no end of hassle when you just cannot remember the right amount of ingredients for a recipe you are preparing and you have to remove all the books from the cupboard just to find the one you need, which for some reason has always found its way to the very back. About 2 years ago I found a gem of a web site that enabled me to banish most of my books to the attic. The site is called deliaonline.co.uk it is of course the website of the well known cook Delia Smith, a favourite of mine who has written many books and has even had her own TV show. The site is very informative with many things to satisfy anyone looking for ideas from a quick snack to a full dinner party. Like most sites the home page has links to other pages, these are never ending on this site as there is just so much information about just about everything. You don?t have to be come a member but if you do sign up is free and you can receive a monthly email telling you what?s new on the site, I have never found these emails to be boring or annoying and sign is short and easy. There is just so much content this review would be far too long to read if I mentioned it all so here is just a few things you will find there when you click on a few of the many tabs:- Wine Here you will find a long list of different kinds of food telling you which wine is best to serve with it, it gives a couple of choices for each food type. Good food shops Here there is a list of food shops from all over the country where you can find the things in Delia?s recipes that are of a good quality . What?s new Here Delia puts her new recipes for you to
try; they can be savoury or sweet. Special diets Here you can get advice and recipes for different needs, like diabetic, intolerance of different food types and of course vegetarian and vegan diets. Menus Here you get help and advice to plan your menu for a dinner party or such. Ingredients A_Z How many times have you found a great sounding recipe only to find some strange word on the ingredients list such as Wasabi and wondered what on earth it is, well the answer to that one and hundreds more are right here. There are many more help links like help with freezing or a conversion table and more. One of the most helpful tabs I have found is the cookery school, here you can learn how to all kinds of basic things like ?how to tell how old an egg is, how to decorate a Christmas cake, roast poultry, bone fish, casserole meat, choose cheese, make bread etc even how to boil an egg would you believe. I first found the site just before Christmas and out of curiosity I click on how to cook a Turkey, I had already cooked many Turkeys but Delia?s way was just a little different, I decided to try her way that Christmas and now would never cook it any other way, the bird is so moist the Delia way. I have a brother who went to live in Stockholm about 30 years ago and was often phoning me to ask how to cook many English dishes when he got a bit nostalgic and wanted to be reminded of home. I emailed him and his Finnish wife a link to Delia?s site; they say it?s fantastic and use it often. All in all I would recommend this using this site to anyone from a young person who has just left home and needs a little help getting started without compromising their indepe ndence by having to keep ringing mum for advice to an adventurous cook preparing a dinner party for a number of important guests or even just someone like me who just wants to try something different. This
site really has something for everyone. Thanks for reading. Kim.
