dmoz.orgIf you love the web, and get on well in the 'virtual' communities that spring up, you will probably enjoy being an ODP editor. When applying, you have to start out small and work up, so its best to apply for a category that (1) has no editor at the time, and (2) hasn't any sub-categories under it yet. There are tons of vacancies for UK editors in the dmoz Regional categories right now, so if you like the idea, can spell and have good grammar, and most importantly, can categorize and describe websites as part of a huge team of fellows then go and become a part of the world's most amazing web directory. Another seemingly forgotten online directory is dmoz.org, lacking in reviews for a good few years - I think it's time to bring "Directory Mozilla" back in to the public eye. The idea here is that it's a web directory to rival Yahoo, only whilst Yahoo seems to list any Tom, Dick and Harry, Dmoz is ran by volunteers who keep their eyes peeled for any unwanted customers. When it comes to submitting your site, this means it is slightly more long-winded than just writing your URL and hey presto! You have to select a category to put it under and add a title and a description. From the moment you've completed that, it takes from 2 weeks to several months ... Read the complete review

dmoz.org is like a socialist version of Yahoo. It's built by volunteers, who aren't paid- and the result is a labour of love (labour, get it? sorry...) which provides accurate, ad-free searching. This struck me as a really good idea. We all need search engines, but ads can be a real waste of time. Also I've noticed that AltaVista etc. seem to carry some very out of date results, as well as some which are totally irrelevant. Worse still, I've found many-a-site which hasn't appeared in AltaVista, or Lycos etc. at all. [1]Design The first thing you notice about the site is it's simplicity. It's design is ... Dmoz.org is the home of the Open Directory Project, ODP for short. Very few people seem to be aware of this site, even though almost everyone has indirectly used it. The ODP is the largest human-edited directory, their motto being 'Human's do it better'. It contains more than 2million recommended, hand-picked links. The ODP's main function is supporting many of the largest search engines in the world, such as lycos, netscape and AOLsearch to name just a few. You'll notice that often a link appears in a catagory style when you search for generic things like places for instance. These are often provided by the ODP. ... Read the complete review

A few words for anyone with a web site to promote. There are no shortage of reviews of this site from the users perspective, so here's some information for people who might want to use it for promotion purposes. You have got to list you site on dmoz - its free, and it is one of the biggest out there. There are many other directories and search engines drawing on this resouce, so a good listing will do wonders for your net presence. The process of getting listed is very easy - go to the category that best fits your site, work through the sub catogeries, click on "add URL" then you get a form to fill in.
