Advantages: For webmasters, this is the quickest and most effective method of getting your site on numerous search engines.

Disadvantages: Editors may change your description slightly - inaccuracies are inevitable.

I came across dmoz.org via Google and found the categories very in-depth and easy to navigate. The site may not be the most appropriate for actually searcing, but if you want to put your site on search engines then this is the best way in my experience! No nonsense, all you do is find the specific category (e.g. for me Arts-->Music-->Bands-->Unsigned Band Resources) and in just days I was in yellowpages.com, google, aol search...this is really beneficial to webmasters, and writing an effective description will lead to a high number of visitors going to your site!
Also on this site, you have the opportnity to become an editor, i.e. having the job of looking through submitted sites and placing them in appropriate categories etc - this would particularly look impressive on e.g. a CV or a UCAS form and is once again very simple to submit.
