Advantages: Great fun for a while

Disadvantages: You gradually realise that it is a tad pointless

Google earth is an application which you download and it gives you satellite images (not live) of a good proportion of the world. My favourite thing about the program is the search functionality which labelled 'Fly To' will take you to things around the world. For some silly reason this gives me a great feeling of power. When the program starts up you see an image of the earth as a globe. If you for example type in your postcode it will progressively zoom in further and further in eventually giving a small scale view of that area.

This is very smooth and pretty beautiful. Google earth is pretty similar to google maps but it does offer a lot more than the web based version. Firstly google earth offers a cache which will store some images so you don't have to load them every time you go on. It also offers a lot of plug-in compatibility which is great. One of my favourites is being able to see user uploaded photographs from around the world.

This is not all that useful if truth be told but is great fun to muck around with every now and again.
