Advantages: 5 million tracks. supports artists
Disadvantages: Audiobooks seem a bit pricey
Impressed.
I got my emusic 35 track trial via lovefilm about a week ago. I initially thought that I would grab the free tracks and then cancel after, now im not so sure.
I`m no music connasseuir, I cant even spell connasseuir!!! I like metal, trance, hardhouse, punk, old skool hiphop and different styles of music but as of late I have got a bit bored of my cd collection and this has really given my music tastes a breath of fresh air. There are over 5 million tracks here and most of these have samplers to listen to before you download/buy.
I dont own an ipod, my girlfriend does and I put music on for her occasionally but im not over familiar with itunes so I cant really compare on how this site fares against this and its competitors.
What I will say is that emusic is really easy to use and most of the artists I have searched for so far are present. It isnt as mainstream as most music sites and focuses more on getting you to search out new artists and explore your tastes inmusic
The reason I dont own an ipod is that I prefer to make my own compilation cds or buy them from shops (old skool you see). I have a wicked sound sytem in my rusty old transit van and driving to work or out with the family is when I most listen to music.
So far I have downloaded Ladyhawke, Ministry and an old Prodigy album and only have 6 tracks left, which is unfortunate as I got my eye on a 23 track Mark EG album.
Emusic offers different subscription packages from £4.99 for 10 tracks a month (about 50p a track) to £60 a month for 300 tracks (20p a track) with lots of intermediate packages in between. I will probably opt for emusic plus which gives you 50 tracks for £11.99 a month (24p per track).
A nice touch is that half the money goes direct to the artist, and since this site is more directed at discovering new artists and music I think this is a far better way to support and enjoy the music and its industry.
You can also choose to buy audiobooks. I have had a quick look and there seems to be a vast selection. The cost is around £8 a month for 1 book which to me seems a bit pricey so I wont be going down that road. Could be good on a long journey though!
The download program is quite good, you need windows media or similar to listen to and then convert to an mp3 device or copy to cd. Its really simple and user friendly.
Overall a great site, especially for people like me who prefer alternative music. And doesnt own an ipod.
Summary: Great website for music fans
