Advantages: Free and fun

I wish I could say I was not one of these Facebook addicts but sadly I think I am. It is a general networking site that is free to use. You can use it keep in contact with old friends, make new ones, join group discussions, arrange and invite people to events, play games and upload photos - those of course being the main things you can do. Facebook seems to come up with a million new applications a day.

I like this site as I can keep up to date with my friends without winding up a huge phone bill, sending hundreds of e-mails or writing letters. I can see what they are up to. Though in a way - there is a down side to the actual social thing involved being you don't contact your friends - you simply view their page and be down with it.

The other thing that worries me is a lot of people have their mobile / home phone numbers on their profile page, as well as their e-mail address, their home address, their work details and their name and date of birth. Its like a gold mine to an identity theif!

You can make your profile private which I think you should be prompted to do when you join the site because when you eventually figuire out you probably should do this, only your friends can see your page!

So in all, Facebook is ACE! I love it!! Keeping up to date with my friends and laughing at all the pictures put up from the last big night out but anyone reading this thinking about getting or already has a Facebook account, a bit of advice :-

Go to the privacy settings and make your profile private. Your friends can still see everything (if you want them to!) and also take your address and telephone number off the wall. If someone (a close friend) needs this information - they can private message you and ask you for it.
