OK, here's my 2p's worth about facebook.com.

First a bit of positioning, to allow you to glibly discount, or noddingly agree with my assessment without reading my review. I'm a forty-something father of three, but like to think myself extremely technically aware; I've worked in IT all my life, I know stuff.

OK, I sense some of you may be switching off now thinking - he thinks he's a 'hip and trendy' Dad but really he's just an old codger. Well perhaps, of course I'd beg to differ, maybe you could go see some of my work, but that's not what we're here for...

I joined facebook a long time ago, to see what it was about. I've dabbled in the many aspects of it, mainly to try to understand what it's all about. I've updated my status faithfully, added friends, challenged them to games, quizzes and surveys, I've grouped them, sponsored them and been sponsored by them, etc.

In my opinion, I think facebook doesn't really have a 'main' point anymore. It's had loads of new things bolted on over time and as a result become lots of diverse things; a bit of social networking, plethora of games, variety of messaging.

There are lots of other sites out there that do these things too, no better or worse than facebook. I suspect their diversification in content/purpose has been just to attract lots of people.

The 'status' idea was good for a while, an extension of MSN's status, but now that's been taken to a whole new level by Twitter. It has loads of games (pretty much the only thing I use it for anymore; Scrabble, and Cribbage being the main ones, plus the occasional).

Facebook has had its moment in the social media limelight, as MySpace did before and Twitter is now. I expect it will bobble along as one of many sites that people will continue to use for whatever they like it for.

Summary: Been there, done that
