Facebook is a social networking website which allows you to keep in contact with friends and relatives wherever they may be.
I joined facebook when I went to university as I saw it as an opportunity to make more friends. I figured that I would be so drunk from nights out that I wouldn't remember who the people that I had met were the next morning. So after a night out I would add people as a friend on facebook that I had met that night, and by the morning I could look at their profile and remember them. That then leads to a closer friendship with that person when you next see them. I found that this worked very well.
Facebook allows you to search for friends (as mentioned above), you can join groups whereby you can meet other like-minded people or just display the group on your profile to show what sort of things you're into or support (e.g. an "I support the armed forces" group). You can make an event and invite people to it. This works like an invitation system, whereby the recipient replies as either: am attending, maybe attending or not attending. This can be helpful if you want to organise trips, parties, nights out etc.
Facebook also lets you upload photos and videos. This is great as you can come back from a night out and see the evening in picture form. You can also 'tag' and be 'tagged' in both pictures and videos. These pictures and videos are then displayed on your profile for all to see.
Facebook also has its own messaging service in the form of email (of sorts) which is very useful, and also an instant messaging service. I don't use the instant messaging service so I won't comment about it.
Another good thing about facebook is the ability to adjust your privacy settings. Setting your profile to private will allow only your friends to see the content of your profile. There is also the ability to block and delete friends if they are getting annoying, or you just want rid.
One problem that I have been having with facebook of late is all of the unnecessary 'updates' that have been made. I think that they recent updates have made facebook a lesser quality service. I am also fed up with the 'add-ons' that you can get on your profile (such as mini games and quizzes). I feel that it is getting too complicated. I used to use myspace, but then quickly changed to facebook as myspace was getting far too complicated. However I now feel that facebook is getting too complicated, just like myspace.
Overall I think facebook is a quality experience, but it is plagued by issues or if becoming too complicated.
Summary: as long as it diesn't get any more complicated i'm happy to use it
