Advantages: great layout, lots of features, popular
Disadvantages: you need friends to use it
Facebook is one of the largest social network site, which in my opinion has out-done myspace.
They website layout is well presented, neat, easy to use and over-all very user friendly.
They do make some changes now and then and sometimes completely revamp the look, but this isn't a bad thing, i think it's good that the website is constantly trying to improve and allow us to give feedback on what we as a user of the site want and do not want to see.
The features it includes are having your own public or private profile with information about yoursel, photos and applications.
The website lets you share as much detail about yourself as you want so there is no reason for you to be forced to share something you don't want to.
Applications are an added extra, where users can make add-ons to your page which could be anything from forming a club, having online games you play against other face book friends, collecting pictures or trophies or even just displaying a random quote/picture on your profile.
The applications range from complex games to simply just adding a picture to your page.
One of the great things about facebook is the fact that other major sites such as youtube have 'add to facebook' button built into their videos so that if you find anything interesting you can share it with all your friends. This goes for anyone with a website who wants to add this feature allowing people to share whatever they find online.
Facebook has a unique advertising system, which works on a bidding system where basically you choose how much you want to spend on advertising, the more you bud the more likely your ad will get seen or clicked. It also allows you to target age range and certain social groups for more efficiency.
Like all social network sites, facebook is criticised for allowing children to get involved with people they have never met over the internet etc
But in all honesty, facebook are doing all they can to stop unwelcome users and as long as it's used sensibly then there is no problem.
Summary: One of the most popular social networking site thats popular for a reason - it's the best one!
