Advantages: Great for socialising and keeping up to date with friends, free!
Disadvantages: Beware ex's catching up with you
Facebook is one of the largest and most popular socialising network websites around at the moment. It is free to use and can be found on www.facebook.co.uk . It used by over 200 million people worldwide and was founded my Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes, who were all students at Harvard University, on 4th February 2004.
Facebook is easy to sign up to and once registered you can join socialising networks, search for old or current Employers, Schools, Colleges or Universities. There are spaces where you can write information about yourself, upload personal photographs, express your moods, send messages, chat to friends, write on walls and personalise your profile. You can find friends using their email addresses, by searching old schools or employers or by typing in their names. It also has a handy "Friends You Might Know" section that shows pictures of people your other friends know and invites you to add them.
You are not automatically added as a friend by people and when someone requests you, you are given the chance to message them first, see their public profile, view their friends or just deny them.
The profiles are all set out the same so you can find information on each friends profile as easily as you can on your own. There are also groups you can join i.e. "Birmingham Network Group" "I Like Caramacs" etc. So if you have a favourite band, film, TV series or football team you can search these groups, join and discuss them with the others who are already members.
Uploading photos is easy and there are 3 different up-loading options available. I prefer the basic one but you can pick one that works for you. You can then add comments to your pictures and even comment on friend's photos/albums. There are walls where you can leave quick 'Hello, how are you?' messages and you can also 'Poke' a friend.
There are also games available to play ranging from action games to gambling. Your scores are kept automatically and you can invite friends to challenge you.
The great thing about Facebook is that it is used by people of all age ranges. I know many friends Moms, Dads, Uncles and even Grandparents are on there. It is a great way to find friends who you haven't seen since school or to meet new people with the same interests as you.
The disadvantages are that people can find you on there, like ex's, bullies generally anyone you don't want in your life anymore and left in the past for a reason. There is also the risks that come with any online socialising and it is best to be fully aware of these before signing up. I would not recommend passing on addresses or too much personal information. Remember to read the terms and conditions carefully and your privacy is at risk when joining these websites.
Overall it's a great website to use, easy to personalise and find friends.
Summary: Good website and easy to use
