Advantages: Nice to catch up with old mates.
Disadvantages: Privacy can be a bit dodgy.
Of all the networking sites out there, in my opinion Facebook.com is the best. Yes, it has it's flaws & isn't the easiest website to navigate (but I don't think any networking site is - they all take some time & effort to figure out), but I think it has the best layout & the widest range of applications.
Facebook is free to join. Once you've signed up you can begin to search for people you may know. You can search via your educational establishments, by workplace or just type a name into the general search box. Once you've found one or two people you know, it's easy to then check their friend's lists & you find more people you know - the whole things starts to snowball then & before you know it you're catching up with people you'd forgotten ever existed!
You can upload pictures to the site, but just be careful of your privacy settings - you don't want any Tom, Dick or Harry getting access to your pics or personal details! Security is a big issue on these sites. I don't recommend making too much personal information public. I've also heard stories that possible employers like to search facebook for job applicants to get a better view of them - so be warned! Best set your whole profile to private if you want that next job....!
There are loads of applications which can be added. These include games, such as scrabble, uno, risk etc, & quizzes such as IQ tests. Most applications are utter rubbish, but there are some decent games to pass the time away.
Overall it's a great way to catch up with people & have a nose into their lives...!
For anyone who hasn't joined yet, & is interested in doing so, the website is www.facebook.com (not .co.uk, but there is provision for all major UK cities/workplaces/schools etc on there).
Summary: If you've not heard of it, where have you been...?!
