Advantages: A quick and easy way to give family and friends an update

Disadvantages: You might find something about yourself on a friends page you don't like!

I am a newbie on Facebook. I was emailing family and friends and wondering why I wasn't getting any reply. I then found out at a family gathering that everybody was using Facebook - so if you can't beat them join them.

I now use facebook to keep family and select friends up to date with photographs of my children and to let them know about their latest accomplishments. I am very picky about who I accept as friends because I wish to safeguard my children. I do not accept friends of friends that I don't know. I think that is the beauty of it, you can be as open or as closed as you want. There are security settings for just about everything that allow you to control what people see and what they don't see.

You can join groups like circle of mums, groups for your home town or become fans of things like lying in bed, massages or popular celebs. You can play games on your own, with your friends or strangers, take quizzes to find out silly things.

The registration process is simple and once completed your ready to find friends, these can be old school chums, work colleagues, family or recent friends - you have to then accept or be accepted to have access to each others pages and be able to communicate.

My only warning is that you have no control over what others put on their pages about you like dodgy school photos. That being said I think that Facebook is a good social networking tool.
