Advantages: Good source of information for entertainment related elements
Disadvantages: EVERYTHING ELSE
A social networking site where you can chat to your friends and family, upload and comment on photos and videos, follow your favourite celebs, learn about upcoming gigs and tell the world a little (or a lot) about your interests. Yeah, sign me up.
What? It's Facebook? nah, I'll pass.
This is generally the feeling I have about Facebook. It was a nice idea, but suddenly it started advertising an insane amount and people found out they could mouth off and argue all they want without many ramifications.
In using Facebook, I have only ever encountered arguments, people wanting to sell you something or people wanting you to follow them on Twitter, look at their Myspace page or watch one of their Youtube videos. These less than encouraging experiences have soured what I can see could have been such a useful tool in meeting new people with similar interests. Many would argue that this is small percential of users on Facebook, but I have tried under numerous guises and through numerous interests to meet genuine individuals without an ulterior motive. Sadly, I have only found around 5 decent people out of roughly 350.
The fact that many people use Facebook simply as a marketing tool is a real tragedy, as it both stops it being enjoyable or useful for some people (such as myself) and turns into a faceless corporation. This is not helped by the fact that you can't use any of their entertaining and fun apps without getting mobbed with adverts and recommendations.
Personally, I think that Facebook COULD be an amazing institution if it just stopped advertising so much and flagged endless self-promotion.
It really is a shame, as the idea was very good and could have worked very well. Instead everyone's mum and corporate entities use it to embarass and shamelessly promote.
The only saving grace is the fact that it still remains a good source of information for entertainment purposes (many games, films and celebrities are on here and post at least semi-reguraly).
Summary: Horrendous, yet very tragic as it could be so awesome
