Advantages: simple interface, no malware, generally reliable, familiar, easy to navigate, detailed, concise.
Disadvantages: fallible information, tiny compatibility issue, potential spoilers, one or two very small ads.
The Vault is a popular wiki site that provides information for all things to do with Bethesda's post-apocalyptic RPG "Fallout" series of games. These include Fallout 1, 2 and 3, as well as any expansions and upcoming games part of or relating to the franchise.
Like any wiki site the information held within is user-posted and ultimately fallible, despite its meticulous handling of cross-checking procedures and research. Everything on this site however, I have usually found to be accurate.
Among the site's categories for information and front-page headings such as "Article of the Day" and "Did you know..." are detailed descriptions of weapons, locations, characters, specifications, dialogue listings and conversation trees, vehicles, organizations and secrets. Many of these articles contain accompanying embedded videos from Youtube as visual aids, despite being already heavily illustrated with remarkable attention to detail. This site contains everything relating to the Fallout Universe, even reviews of games and expansions from the best-known gaming sites and recent news pertaining to relevant products.
Other than the potential for misrepresentation and false info, the only other problem I can think of is spoilers. - Like many sites of this kind there is very little warning or scope to avoid spoilers. An unwritten rule is that if you don't want to know absolutely everything about a particular thing, don't click the link.
The site has a decent members forum, where all things Fallout are discussed in depth, and is set out in sections and subsections to avoid complication. Like the rest of the site, the forum is not in the least bit convoluted and is familiar and easy to navigate.
The site is fast and well-designed, with only a few ad-banners that are barely noticeable at the very bottom of the window. (I actually had to check before I wrote this article.) Fortunately completely free of malware, These ads don't slow anything down and all relate to gaming, which is better than obnoxious primary-coloured popups that declare "Omg u hav wun a free iPod!!1!! give us your credit card detailz for further information!!!"
I suppose one more problem is that the site has a teeny little compatability issue with Internet Explorer. Unusual for a wiki site, every time the user clicks the "back" button, it brings up an error message. This has happened to me on a few computers now, so I doubt its just me.
Aside from this, the wiki handles perfectly.
