Advantages: Its not too general to write about mustard
Disadvantages: It is too geneal to write about bread.
If you've been reading my Opinions, you will have noticed that I have just lately been getting back into the world of dooyoo.co.uk after an extended hiatus, part of which was a result of being in the USA for an extended period. I've really been enjoying the dooyoo experience more now than before. I especially love reading opinions that are different to the rest - on off the wall topics or written in an original style. As I am sure you are aware, there are plenty of them out there!! I decided it was time for me to write something different. I really like some of the opinions on basic food items. I thought it was time I did one!! I don't know how, but the idea of doing an opinion on "Bagels" came to mind. I love bagels, and I know I could also put a good story to it that would make for an interesting read. I sat down yesterday and spent a good number of hours writing my opinion on bagels. I have to say that I was quite pleased with it. Onto the Internet I went, straight to the dooyoo.co.uk website (as usual) and did a search for bagels. To my surprise, the search was fruitless. I tried to make it broader and did a search for bread. I have to say I was quite shocked that there was none! Nevertheless, I wasn't put out. I decided to submit a recommendation to add a category for bagels. I went through the normal procedure and also went to the trouble of searching the web for a picture of a bagel so that I could include this in my submittal. I sent it off and waited for my reply. I was quite surprised to see a reply in my inbox today. I was very impressed with the quality of service dooyoo.co.uk were providing me. Unfortunately, the reply I got (from the customer care manager Joanna) wasn't what I was hoping for. I was told that a category for bagels would be too specific. I have to say that this didn't delight me, but all the same I wasn't giving up. I replied, explaining that I had already written the opini
on and asked for any suggestions of where else on the site I could put it. Within a few minutes, I had a reply telling me that there is no other suitable category and that I shouldn't write opinions unless there is a category to put them into - MY OPINION HAD BEEN REJECTED!!! I was very alarmed by this. Did this not go against the essence of the dooyoo.co.uk website?? Is it not a place for use to blab on about WHATEVER we choose and hope that others would be interested enough to read our opinions?? Obviously not! Being the annoyingly persistent person that I am, I decided not to give up just yet. This time I decided to ask the category manager, Simone. Again, I received a reply back within minutes. This time I was told that a category for bagels OR bread would be? wait for it - too broad!! Yes indeed! According to dooyoo.co.uk, a category can be both too broad and too narrow at the same time!! If fact: "When the food and drink category was created, it was decided we didn't really want opinions on everyday items such as bread as its too broad and wouldn't really be useful to the site." Simone Berry, 15th January 2002. So it is ok to have categories such as: -Mustard in General -Tea in General -Vinegar in General And not bread? Are these not everyday items also? Is vinegar more interesting than bread? Did they have some sort of conference to decide which was interesting??? I can just imagine it: "Vinegar has a stronger smell than bread, therefore it is more interesting" "Although there are a number of different types of bread, there are a number of different types AND strengths of mustard, and that makes mustard more interesting" I appreciate that some order must in place, but doesnt this just seem ludicrous?? I have to say, this has greatly lowered my opinion of dooyoo.co.uk. I will continue to write and read op
inions though because it is incredibly enjoyable. As a final word, I want to give kudos to both Simone Berry and Joanna Starr for their speed at responding to my emails, their professionalism and also their manner. To conclude, as a word of advice, make sure you check if the category exists or if they will add the category for you before writing an opinion, otherwise you will have wasted a few hours for nothing. "Until next time - be good to yourself, and you family" (Jerry Springer) UPDATE >> Received an email from Simone Berry today to say that she has added an item for specialist breads. Thanks for everyone that supported and commented on this-- now read the famous bagel opinion!! I've improved my rating of dooyoo from two starts to four stars now.

Pjenkins - 16/01/02 A truly great op. Made me laugh, especially considering that the aforementioned category managers and I had a run in only this morning. The people demand their bagels, even if they don't like 'em. It's a principle thing people!!! |
