Advantages: Unusual Food Gifts
Disadvantages: A Bit Expensive
Isn't it really frustrating when you are faced with buying a gift for your partner, husband or father. You are probably like me and wrack your brains for ages trying to think of something at least vaguely interesting to buy them. A task however which is never an easy one. I'm not sure why this has to be the case with the male species. I don't class myself as being materialistic and always wanting for things. However when my husband asks me if there is anything in particular that I would like for an up and coming birthday or anniversary, I always have at least one or two ideas in mind. Maybe a new perfume, some flowers or an item of clothing perhaps (this item however must be chosen with him being present or I will get something completely different). When you ask them what they want though it is such a different story. It really is like drawing teeth. My hubby for example needs to be reminded to buy himself new underwear and socks. (I eventually combat this by surreptitiously throwing it all out so he has nothing left to wear and has no other choice but to buy new- I know for a nurse I do have an incredibly cruel streak in me!!!! Honestly though sometimes I feel a bit like his mother. Anyway I have come to the conclusion that the way to a man's heart is most definitely through his stomach. I don't want to generalise men however I have found that the majority of them whom I have met tend to like hot and spicy food too. Well I think that I have finally cracked the present buying nightmare when I happened upon the following website a few months ago by pure and utter chance. I am now going to use it for my brother, husband and uncle on their next birthdays. My father bless him was used as the original guinea pig when trying out this website. Trust me if they like a bit of spice in there lives they will love what's on offer here. So what on earth am I talking about? Scorchio.co.uk that's what.
This website is dedicated to all things hot and spicy. They sell all sorts of chilli sauces, marinades, salsas, dressings, rubs, dips, and relishes from around the world. The home page consists of a fiery orange background. The site itself is quite basic however this is preferable to me as it makes navigation somewhat simpler. There is a handy product menu here and also featured are the top ten best sellers. You can choose from a selection of items from the drop down menu which consists of gift kits, gifts under £15, American hot sauces, Caribbean hot sauce, world hot sauce and super hot sauces, and a selection of snacks and chocolates. There is even the option to buy a hamper and personalise it by filling it with a selection of single items, hence tailoring your gift to the requirements of the recipient. You really will have to log on to the site to appreciate the vast nature of the types of product on offer. A good feature of this site is that it has something called a scorchometer, which put simply is a gauge for measuring just how hot the products that they are selling are. There is a rating of 1-5 chillies which are highlighted and tell the strength of the products offered. Strength 5 being the hottest. I had a look at the gift kit section which has weird and wonderful chilli related gift hampers on offer. These range in price from £25 upwards and feature a plethora of interesting products and combinations. I decided to buy a Scorching snack kit which cost £34.99 for my father who is chilli mad and which consisted of Mr Wasabi peanuts, ass kicking snack mix, daves gourmet smoking bbq nuts, pleasure and pain organic dark Naga Jolokia chilli chocolate, chilli popcorn, ass kickin almonds, habanero crisps and death rain Cajun crisps. I know that these are not run of the mill gift items and I would suggest that you will score a lot of originality points when purchasing these items. In addition the products come beautifully packed in a lovely wooden crate with a lid. This is a gift which certainly falls into the category of unusual and unique too. There are single products on offer and lots of special offers and you could if desired purchase single items and then make up your own gift kit if you wanted to save yourself some money. In addition you can purchase gift vouchers here too which is super as the products are quite individualistic it may be more appropriate to have the recipient choose items which will be relevant to them. Denominations are from £10 up to £50 and can be purchased as an e-voucher or you can also request paper vouchers which will be posted out to the recipient.
In order to purchase from this website you will need to create an account with them, this is a relatively painless procedure and takes only a few minutes to do. Payment details need not be entered until you wish to purchase items. I prefer this as it adds to the security of the site. Ordering here is a very simple process, just select the items that you require and pop them into your basket. Free delivery is offered on all items over £50 in value and up to 20KG in weight. (UK mainland postal addresses only). This service should take 1-3 days. Items under this value will be charged based on weight of the parcel have a look at the site as this will vary. Courier next day delivery is £6.99. The company will also despatch worldwide however again prices are dependant on weight and location. There is also the opportunity during checkout to write a gift card with your purchases. A relatively painless process. A confirmation email is sent to you and a further one when the items are actually despatched.
Overall a site well worth a look for chilli lovers. Bear in mind there are also lots of chilli loving ladies out there to so not to risk coming across as being sexist this may also be a website relevant to the lady in your life too!! I am glad that I found this as it has helped me already in deciding on items that I will be sending to various family members as gifts over the next few weeks and months. Overall a great website and something unique which I'm sure won't have been experienced before by the recipient. Items can be expensive however if you order the basics and make up your own basket you can keep the costs down. Feedback from my father was that it was a lovely idea with delicious products. High praise indeed coming from him. Overall 5 stars for the novelty value. Although somewhat expensive. Recommended.

- 19/02/09 This is really good review but I marked it down because it's under 'food and drink websites in general'. Therefore I expected to find some comparisons. But this is just about Scorchio.co.uk. Sorry! :0( |
