Advantages: Fascinating, Expanding, Easy to use
Disadvantages: Still small
I stumbled across friendsreunited.co.uk about 6 months ago by clicking onto a banner. It is a simple, yet effective concept - listing all the schools, colleges and universities in the UK. It allows you to try and find people you went to school with, or let them find you!!! Once you register (free) you can find the schools etc. that you attended, and add your name and year of leaving to it with a description (optional) of what you do now, where you live and so on. When I first joined there were only 6 members at my secondary school - now there are over 100!! It is great fun watching people add to it daily - people you have lost contact with or forgotten about! There are many nice features with this site. Options include the ability to search people by their names, you can add photos, messages, memories. You can choose to be e-mailed each time someone joins your school, college or university. It is very easy to use and find your way around. You can contact the people that you want to, but you have to do it via friendsreunited for an upgrade fee of five pounds, which I don't think is too bad really. They say they do this to avoid people using the site for the wrong reasons, such as sending junk e-mail. I have not contacted anybody yet, but it is fascinating to find out what your old school chums are up to. There is a 'Success Stories' board where people talk about reunions and meetings that have been created thanks to friendsreunited. At the moment friendsreunited, although greatly expanded since I first joined, is still relatively small. In my year at secondary school I was 1 of 350 pupils, and so far there are only 6 people registered from that year. When more people join, it will be more powerful ... so spread the word!!!

- 18/08/01 I was dreadful at keeping in touch with people from school. Registered at the site, and am now in contact with about 7 old schoolmates, and have been invited to 2 weddings I had no idea were happening. Great idea for a site...you have to wonder why you didn't think of it! Great op, too! |
