Advantages: You may learn something

Disadvantages: Has the power to do your head in

I just had to do this one! Not surprisingly, there are more websites on the Internet about computing , than any other subject.

There are site to help the newbies ( technical term for someone who knows nothing about computers) to the techno wizards also known as " my mate who know all about computers". Even people who really know about computers use these websites. So I have a few recomendations.

If you are a newbie I would recommend a site which is not really a computing site at all but it is your best "first port of call" www.bbc.co.uk/webwise. Here you will find everything from jargon busters to interactive games to help develop keyboard and mouse skills.

Techno wizards tend to know it all already. They don't really need anything. They go to mysterious websites that no one else would understand.

If you really do know computing you'll want to look at www.w3.org you will find every kind of scripting, protocol and software tools for developing the Internet as directed by Tim Bernes Lee. If it's not on this site it's not worth knowing!

Then there's www.cnet.com chock full of tips and tricks from digital photography to setting up a home network. It is also brimmimg reviews by ordinary people like you and me, as well as the experts who run the site. Some of them were involved in the development of various prducts and software.

Microsoft is not really beloved of computer professionals, but this part of their website is useful http://www.msdnaa.net/search/results.aspx?SearchTe xt=error+messages. Have you ever wondered what a fatal exception is? Or why your sound that was working perfectly well this morning is on strike this evening? Or what an error message actually means? Well you can find out here.

www.webopedia.com will explain what all those strange acronyms mean and translates jargon that all good computer experts speak into semi plain English.

www.bcs.org this site belongs to the official governing body of the Computer industry in Britain. It is responsible for the most respected Computer qualifications (like BSc computerr Science).

http://www.computing.co.uk gives useful news about what i going on in the Computer Industry.

www.actionscript.org, www.sql.org and a host of others too numneous to mention deal with specific software development. They are very useful too to the cleaver people who write all the programs we use on our computers every day without a second thought!

Summary: Dive in to these websites, there's one for everyone!
