Newest Review: ... people and view other people's trees (if you get their permission). With gold membership you can do all of this, plus search and view records. Personally, I only buy standard membership, as I message people on genesreunited but prefer to find records on ancestry. I find that ancestry has a much wider range of records so it is pointless spending money on the gold membership when everything ... more

Genesreunited, as the name suggests, is the offspring of the hugely popular friendsreunited. It is a website in which you can build your family tree, search for relatives, and contact people who you think you may be related to. It is similar in set-up to friendsreunited in that you can register and use the site for free but you have to pay if you wish to contact, or read messages from other people. Membership is currently priced at £9.95 for 6 months standard membership and £34.95 (currently on offer at £31.46) for 6 months gold membership. With standard membership you can contact, and receive messages from people and view ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Genius for Genes! (785 words)

Genes Reunited.co.uk is a website originally set up by the Friends Reunited people and is for those people who are tracing their family trees. www.genesreunited.co.uk is free to join - but if you want to email other researcher it is £9.95 per year (this can be paid as Single Membership or as Continuous Membership) and is a pay per view site for other items such as census. You can add your family tree on here too, and there are some records to search as well as other people's trees, which you may not be able to access without paying the above fee. Single Membership is where you pay a one off fee - best to start off with to see if you ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review genesreunited.co.uk: Genesreunited: Useful or not? (351 words)
by - written on 19/05/09 (Very useful, 32 readings)
Rating:

I suppose it all depends on what level you're at as a family tree researcher & what you want from a website just how useful you'd find genesreunited. On the plus side the membership fee is minimal (under £10 for 6 months) & you get access to the message boards as well as the ability to see whether other people have names on their tree that match with yours. On the downside you need to buy credits to view the census records, the BMD records & the death records from World War I & World War 2. The question you need to ask then, is whether you want to pay almost £20 per year for access to some message boards & the ability ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Genes reunited or grab my tree (386 words)
by - written on 09/04/09 (Very useful, 40 readings)

Genes reunited a warning to any newcomer to family history. Genes reunited when it first started was a godsend to newbie family historians. A cheap user friendly web site that helped you make connections without a lot of hard work. Now times have moved on there is much more genealogical information available online, some of it free of charge and Genes now seems to be populated by name collectors. What are name collectors? They see you have a John Smith born London 1825 in your family tree, they contact you say they have a John Smith in their tree can they look at your tree? If you say yes the next thing you know is that your entire tree ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review genesreunited.co.uk: Rather a confused site (229 words)

Genes Reunited (or as it was previously known, Genes Connected) is an odd kind of a website. It has laudable aims and can prove useful. Generally, I don't find the site that easy to use. I usually upload a GEDCOM file and this nearly always causes the site to crash. I get an awful lot of people sending messages enquiring about matches and quite a lot of the time, none of the information matches at all so I am left wondering why they sent the message in the first place. If you do manage to make some connections, these can be very useful and rewarding. Despite the 1000 or so relations in my tree, I have made only two such connections. That's not to ...  Read the complete review
