Advantages: cheaper by coach

Disadvantages: book online and wait for a ticket

National Express is the best coach service in Europe. It covers Britain, Europe and Ireland. I know it's not the best way to travel, or the most comfortable, but it often works out to be the cheapest.

On the home page for the National Express website (gobycoach.com) you will be asked to register. This is quick and easy. You can then book on line using a credit or debit card. All you have to do is click on times and fares and enter your departure point and destination. All the information you need will appear. If this doesn't suit you, you can get a list of all departures to your selected destination.

You can put in the details of student discount cards, or other cards, once the price appears, fill in the box for how many people are travelling, and you get a final price. The main problem with booking online is that you have to wait for your tickets to arrive and you could be waiting for four days. This isn't much use if you are in a hurry.

I found this site useful for finding out coach fares, but I must admit that I much prefer to go down to our local bus station and book a coach ticket in the National Express Office. That way you are certain of up to date information, correct fares, times, etc and you get your ticket there and then. If you want to travel immediately you can as there is no need to wait for tickets.

Or now print off your own with the new 'virtual ticket'!

If you're in a hurry you can collect your tickets from a main coach station ticket office.

I used this once... ended up on a coach full of old people, which took about 9 hours just to go 150 miles. But the ticket-ordering is good.
