Advantages: easy to navigate site, packed with useful information
Disadvantages: used to be aimed at older women, needs to shed this myth
GOOD HOUSEKEEPING magazine has a new website www.goodhousekeeping.co.uk
First of all a little about Good Housekeeping itself. This is the name of a glossy magazine aimed at women from age 35 upwards. It is packed full of consumer information and the December issue, out now priced £3.20, is full of brilliant ideas for Christmas parties, food, presents, decoration and how to cope with the stress! It is worth the money just to get ideas for decorating your house or for a new outfit or what presents to buy!
I have been a subscriber to the magazine for a couple of years, before that I would buy it occasionally. But now with the new website I find it a very useful resource where I can go and take a look if I need help or advice with anything to do with housekeeping.
The Good Housekeeping Institute was started in 1924 and is now a benchmark by which to assess the quality of products. The GHI tests products and publishes the results of these, giving awards and accreditation to the best products. Look for the GHI logo on products you buy, this means they are approved by them and have undergone thorough testing to make sure they are worth buying. This applies to everything from food to large domestic appliances.
But we are here to talk about the new website. This is a very easy site to navigate, along the top are a series of headings, set out rather like a card index system. You just click on these and it takes you to the section where you can find lots of information under that subject heading. Easy!
The different sections are as follows:
HOME this gives some general information about the site itself and mentions item in the news, new products, books etc. On this link you can also join the GH website and receive e mail information from them and take part in surveys (unpaid).
FOOD this section contains recipes and you can do a search for a particular recipe or add one of your own. It gives advice on what foods are in season. There is a question and answer section where you can ask for help with any of your food or cooking queries. GH also have a good selection of cookery books. I have still got one of theirs which someone bought me when I was first married, it has been a well used and much loved book in my home ever since!
GH also run cookery schools where you can go and attend cookery sessions and learn how the professionals work. These are not cheap however, but I am sure they are well worth the cost, although I have not been on one myself.
CONSUMER ADVICE is the next section. This gives advice on products that the GH Institute have tested themselves. There is also advice on buying products, your consumer rights, how to treat and get rid of stains, how to deal with pests and also a section on cleaning. I find this very useful, much better to click on here and find out how to get that ink out of a skirt than have to search through the library.
HEALTH there is a Ask the Doctor section where you can ask any medical queries or concerns, a section on diet and healthy eating, one on fitness, how to prevent illness, what symptons to look for and advice on general health and wellbeing. If you have suddenly developed an ache in your knee, for example, you can click on here and find out possible causes. Again, great if you dont want to trouble your doctor or phone NHS direct, you can look on here first of all.
LOOKS this concentrates on hair, make up, skin care, body care, general grooming and looks and beauty products. There are some great things in this section, I could spend hours on this part alone!
BOOKS GH have their own publications and as I said earlier, they are very useful. They also talk about Book Clubs and there is a book review section.
TRAVEL this is divided into sections for UK, Europe, Rest of World and favourites of the readers. GH holidays are quite expensive and I would say they are for the more affluent members of society, but take a look for yourself.
CHAT this is a community section where you can leave a comment on their message board. Topics being discussed at the moment are ex pats, kiwi fruit and recipes. I havent actually posted anything on here myself yet, but it is interesting to read what others have to say.
OFFERS AND EVENTS this gives details of offers available by post from GH and also lists details of special offers and events. GH have a lot of special events throughout the year, but as I live in the north and they mainly seem to be held in London I have not been to any.
CONCLUSION take a look at this website, it might open your eyes, especially if you have seen GH magazine in the newsagents and thought it was a magazine for your mother rather than you. If you look at the website you will see how its image has been modernised, whilst still keeping the same GH quality.
Summary: GH a great website, great magazine and a great institution
