Advantages: Fast, efficient, localized to most languages
Disadvantages: Is it purely because of performance, or does Google's marketing affect our choice of search engine?
Google Inc has existed as a company since 1998 and is most known for the internet search engine, www.google.com.
I remember during the late 90s, my search engine of choice was Altavista. Somehow, perhaps initially through clever marketing and then through providing a solid service with reliable results, Google became my search engine of choice in the early 2000s.
Google does feature some competitive advantages over competing search engines. Google is localized to most, if not all territories in the world, so you can access your local Google web site, localized to your native language. Google.com is also a portal to Google Inc's other services, inluding Google Mail and Google Maps. For webmasters, Google AdSense allows any webmaster to put Google banners and Text ads on their web site in order to seek and earn money off clicks.
The main reasons Google has the position among search engines it has today is: solid and reliable performance, clever marketing, extensive localization and the fact that the Google brand offers such a variety of services, like e-mail and map services in addition to purely being an internet search engine.
All this makes Google.com the logical start page and a go-to source for any type of information you seek online.

- 24/07/09 Google is great, but you have to remember that it finds the most popular links and therefore gives you the most 'mainstream' results. Often (but not always), of course, that's exactly what one wants. |
