Google: A Search Engine & More

Advantages: very fast loading, huge index of sites, lots of different uses
--- Google Search Overview ---
Google was created in 1997 and is an internet search engine, which indexes websites, blogs etc submitted by users and makes them available to be searched for by it's viewers for free. Basically say you want to know information on Paris, you could type in 'Paris' and any website related would be shown in the results page. Sorry if that sounds patronising but best to explain what it is first. What makes Google different is the vast ways in which it can be used. Many of these are described below.
--- Speed Of Loading ---
"Results 1 - 10 of about 797,000,000 for test [definition]. (0.23 seconds)"
Proudly, at the top of the page the site displays the blisteringly quick speed of Googles search result page for that query. The amount of results shown, giving you just a small hint at how vast the search engines index is.
--- Advanced Search ---
Time to get really specific, I want it pages that include the word Tom Hanks but don't include the word Actor etc. Google is smart enough to be able to be able to pick these from the millions of results using the advanced search. This tool is very useful if the pages and pages of results seem a bit too daunting to sift through and you need to trim it down a bit.
--- Other Tabs ---
Whatever you've entered as a search string, i.e Bloc Party
You can also click from the following tabs
Images Maps News Video Mail
to automatically have Google look up associated media, i.e. Bloc Party videos, news and images. A wonderful tool that loads up just as quick as the main text results do, all under one site.
--- Calculations ---
'10 + 10' - Google will show the result as a calculation as well as giving you any associated links to sites.
'1ft in inches' - exactly the same, showing the results quick and faster than you could load up a dedicated website for this in many cases.
A great tool I often grab when converting units over, even converting up to the minute foreign currency i.e. '£ in $'
--- 'I'm Feeling Lucky' ---
Well, are you punk?, sorry couldn't resist that. This button is shown at the very heart of the Google.com page and available when you first enter your search. It will take you to the first result without going to the results page, personally i don't use this feature as I don't see the point as i often want to look at what results are available before choosing my destination.
--- 'Define' ---
Clicking define from the results page will define the word you have searched for, another handy tool for those too lazy to pick up a dictionary.
--- Googlewhack ---
Just a small mention. Due to the vast size of Google, finding a site using two random search words with only one result is a very difficult thing to do and finding one is called a Googlewhack. Look up Dave Gorman for more information, just given a mention as it's a use/fun thing to do on Google.com.
--- Overall Use ---
These are just a few of the uses of Google.com for the average web user, it is a simple, clean looking search engine that is unbelievably quick loading, has a huge index of websites (the biggest index currently on the web) and receives millions of queries a day without slowing down. This has made it a firm favourite for most users and a frequent home page for people so that searching is just a click and split second away.
Basically it's the number 1 search engine for three reasons:-
- speed of loading
- biggest index of sites
- easy to use (type in search query, click to search, results shown)
I use it as my default search engine for these reasons and so do many other millions of other users. It's simple and it works at the end of the day
Summary: A simple search engine that houses a lot of functionality
