Good ol' Google!

Advantages: Very easy to use, clear results.
Disadvantages: It gives you an enormous amount of matching web pages!!!
I'm sure eveyone on the planet has heard of Google, but in case you need a refresher: Google is an internet search engine.
I have used Google for my searches ever since I started to use the internet many years ago. I find it to be the best search engine because it lays out your search results clearly and you can easily browse through the results to find the one which is most appropriate. When it displays the results, the title of the webpage is shown in big blue letters, and a relevant excerpt from the web page is shown below the header, so you can decide if it will contain the information you need.
When you perform a search, Google will tell you how long the search took and how many results it found. As an example, I just did a search for "dooyoo", it took 0.07 seconds and found 2,750,000 results. It normally shows you 10 results per page, and you can move forward to the next page using the links at the bottom.
But Google is now so much more than just a search engine for web pages - at the top of the Google homepage you will see links such as "Images", "Maps", "News", "Video", "Shopping", "Books" and even "YouTube".
These are quite self explanatory, but here's a brief description of each:
Images: you can search for images of a specific thing. For example if you are looking for a picture of a black cat, click the "Images" link and then search for Black Cat. The results will be displayed (as pictures) and you can choose to show All Image Sizes, or just small, medium, large or extra large images.
Maps: This is a route planner (see my reveiw on this for more detail), it can give you directions to any destination and you can see the route on satellite pictures so you can effectively take the "virtual journey" before you set out in your car and do the real thing.
News: This seaches for news reports on a particular topic. So if you are looking for articles on Barack Obama, type him in and it will bring up all related items.
Video / YouTube: These sort of do the same thing, they search for a video on a subject. So if you're looking to watch Madonna's latest video, this is the place to be.
Shopping: This is a price comparison tool, you type in the product you want and it will search for it and tell you which shops have got it at what price. I have used this before and not found it to be very useful - you don't seem to get many results. I find Kelkoo much better for this sort of thing.
So Google has developed greatly from its humble days as a mere web page search engine: You can search for pretty much anything and narrow the results down to images or video etc.
Its very user friendly - you can even customise the home page now to have a nice pattern on it (rather than the very plain white background) and it can show things such as latest sports results and local weather.
Overall it does it's job very well, I wouldn't use any other search engine.
Summary: A useful tool.
