Advantages: Accurate search results and a host of other products

Disadvantages: None that I can think of!

Google was first launched as a search engine around 1997, as a research project by two PhD students at Stanford University. They were tested a thesis that a site with more relevant incoming links (i.e. other websites with relevant content linking to them) would mean that that website is itself highly relevant and should therefore rank higher in searches. What resulted from this thesis experiment was a simple, easy to use search engine which produced extremely relevant search results. That was the beginning of the Google empire, which now includes a host of additional products and services; from targeted pay-per-click advertising, to email accounts, to document storage and sharing and payment processing for websites amongst many other things. Google is also set to launch its own open source operating system to rival Microsoft Windows in laptops in 2010, with the desktop version expected to be launched sometime after that. Despite all these extra products though, Google is still best known for its fast and accurate search engine which I find a delight to use! When I first tried Google in the late 90s, I never looked back and now rarely turn to any other search engine.

Summary: Google began as a the result of a research project and is now a global empire!
