Eleven years after its creation the word 'Google' has become synonymous with searching for something on the Internet, and the now the word can be used as both a noun and a verb.

'Google's play on the term [Googol] reflects the company's mission to organise the immense amount of information available on the web.'

Google is a search engine, this allows you to type in a word and Google scours the internet looking for those keywords. Although seemingly simplistic, Google is a powerful tool.

Google's homepage is good-looking, but extremely simple so that young children through to older people who may be new to the Internet. It contains the simple coloured letters spelling 'Google'. Underneath is a simple text box in which you can enter your search term. After you've entered the term you are looking for you have many options, you can search the term on the internet by pressing 'Google Search', you can be taken straight to the first result by clicking 'I'm feeling lucky' and if you are on UK Google you can search just web pages just from the UK. These are the most basic options. If you want to narrow down your search even more you can conduct an 'Advanced Search' in which you can chose the language of your search results, what phrase that results need, and what results should not be included in the results. Plus much more!

Starting as a search engine, Google has expanded to much more, mostly through advertising revenue. Google now provides many services, such as a Language Translation Tool, Image Search, Video Search, Product Search, News Search and a Maps Tool.

The Language Translation Tool offers a dictionary translation of any phrase or web page from one language to another. Be warned, as it is a dictionary translation! i.e. it does not offer grammar or nuances of language; it just translates each word individually, much like using a tangible dictionary to look-up each word.

The Image Search searches the Internet for pictures with that phrase in their name.

The Product Search is currently in Beta and searches for the product you type in and allows you to compare online prices of that item.

The News Search shows the most recent news stories and allows you to search them.

Google Maps allows you to search for any location and can provide detail routes, travel times and with Google street view you can plan your journeys out far in advance.

In conclusion Google is the best Search Engine by far, and is used by the most people worldwide. Say the word to anyone and I'm sure they will know what you mean. Most Web Browsers even contain a Google Search Bar built-in.
