“ Buy camping and outdoor equipment online. „
With 30 stores nationwide it's likely that most people will be in reasonable distance from a store. They stock items for a number of outdoor activities including camping, walking, horse riding, mountaineering and rock climbing.
Compared to similar shops not many come close to having the range of stock that gooutdoors have in their large stores and the range in price and quality will suit all customers. As an example 2 man tents range from £20 to £360 so whether you want to take a tent to a festival or head up some serious mountains they can cater for you although the seriously top end selection is limited but most would go to specialist retailers for such needs.
Due to the size of the stores they usually have a large area with a lot of tents pitched so you can get a true feel for the size and whether it would suit you. In other areas they have terrain blocks to try how shoes and boots work for different events and a climbing wall to see how climbing shoes fit and work.
They stock a good variety of Duke of Edinburgh approved equipment which have all been carefully selected to meet the needs of participants.
The prices are extremely good. For a fee of £5 you recieve a card allowing you the lower advertised prices. If you are making more than a few low value purchases this pays for itself. Its a rare occurance that you will find an item cheaper in another shop or online. Even if you do they will price match and beat it by 10% as long as the product is exactly the same and in stock at the competing shop or website.
Every few weeks they release short term offers which are truly amazing. Getting half price items from their already low prices is a regular occurance.
The staff present aren't the experienced types you would find at small independant retailers. They seem to be trained to Go Outdoors standards, which is great if you are a novice but getting advice on the more technical aspects seem to be met with blank stares or answering a different question.
The website works well and you can ship to store or to home and check stock levels at your local stores so you dont need to waste a trip if you know what you're after.
Looking through the reviews here, there seems to be some mixed opinions on Go Outdoors, which suprises me to be honest. Obviously I've not visited every store - there are over 20 around the country - so some may be better than others, but the one in Loughborough has always been excellent. They stock an incredible range of goods for most main outdoor pursuits. Hiking, camping, climbing and cycling are the most obvious but they also have good stock ranges for fishing, running, skiing and even horse riding! The store is basically a huge warehouse, sectioned off into various areas for each activity. Stock is well priced and there is always an excellent selection. Brands range from budget to high end gear so there is something to suit every pocket. The walking and hiking range is especially good - brands such as Craghoppers, Berghaus, Columbia, Merrell, North Face & Rab are all available along with plenty of others. Go Outdoors pricing works so that if you purchase their discount card once a year (price £4 at the time of writing this) you get extra money off everything in store - each item shows the price with & without the discount card. This is a clever way for them to encourage store loyalty of course, but having said that the discounts to be had are well worth it. Criticisms? Well, the range of cycling stuff is rather limited in my opinion so that would be worth keeping in mind if you are thinking of visiting especially for that. Also even with the discount card some stock can definitely be found cheaper elsewhere if you shop around.... but you could probably say the same for any number of shops. The car park at the Loughborough is also quite small but even so, we have always managed to get a space - probably helps that we usually go on a sunday when we know it will be quieter. Definitely worth a visit if there is one in your area - store details are listed on their website.
There is one of these big go outdoors "superstores" very close to me and I have visited it on a number of occasions. It is true that there is a vast selection of products on offer, and credit to the store, they have managed to stock some quality brands of products but that's where the advantages finish. The stock is jumbled, I recently and wanting a new pair of walking trousers I collected five to try on. Once in the fitting room not one pair of the trousers were the same size stated on the hanger.
I also found a great base layer - without a price tag so I had a great surprise when I finally got to the front of the queue at the till and found it was £50 more than any other base layer that I had seen.
The other disadvantage of going to such a big chain such as this is there are actually very few of the many staff there who are familiar with the more intricate (and expensive) bits of kit. Remaining with staff service I also had a very poor experience with their returns policy. I took back a pair of gloves which despite being advertised as waterproof, weren't. All credit to the store they exchanged the item for a different brand however to allow them to do this I had to be "educated" (their words) by the manager about what the gloves would do. Standing there for ten minutes listening him to tell me that my ski gloves weren't designed to be waterproof (despite being advertised as so) and that he wasn't surprised that I got wet hands on the slopes because I'd bought the wrong product. Patronised from the top of my head to the tips of my toes I was left absolutely seething!
Despite the great choice there appears to be little knowledge within the staff team to back it up. Despite advertising their low prices, most things can be found cheaper elsewhere, and despite having a good returns policy (which they do adhere to) they don't mention the patronising (and incorrect) lectures that you have to endure before you get your exchange/return.
After having my baby I decided I'd better get a decent waterproof coat so I could still go out when it was raining. I don't normally spend a lot on clothes so was shocked at the prices of stuff that I saw in Blacks and places like that.
Then I found this website which has a huge range across the whole price range, including many reductions and sale items. For example, looking at men's fleeces yesterday the price range went from about £3 to about £200 so I think there really would be something for everyone.
The site is easy to navigate and split down into quite narrow categories so if you know exactly what you're looking for you can find it easily. I found a nice 3 in 1 coat that I like the look of and was the right price so decided to order it which was an easy process. I also checked the returns policy as I was a bit concerned about buying something like that without seeing it first and that was very straightforwards but I didn't need it in the end.
As a specialist company i imagine they do well. We went twice over the weekend, the store in Wakefield and in Sheffield. Obviously not the best time to go, both were jam packed with very little parking spaces. The Sheffield store was up a back street that look like It was surrounded by a residential home and pubs, So parking was very difficult. Not sure what i was expecting from the store. They did not dissapoint with all the different things on sale. But i thought a lot of the products were a little gimiky?! if thats not a little too harsh, But me and my friends agreed, and the prices were very confusing. We saw the advert on television for a sale, Going camping on thurdays for 5 days, we thought we would nosey for a bargain. The prices do look great in the shop and catch your attention as they should. But on closer reading, only at those prices when you pay for a Go outdoors membership card, hmm. not a rip off at only £4 for the year if you go camping a lot should be worth it. But we only purchased a couple of cooking tins and my friend some kind of protective spray, which came to very little, but to get at those prices had to apply for a membership. And everything really is under one roof, theres nothing they didn't think of. But i just believe that with a little bit of research those same products or equivelent could be purchased else where for cheaper. Not sure what its like to purchase of the website, can this membership be avoided?!
For those of you who are unaware, Gooutdoors are a company which specialize in outdoor equipment such as tents, clothing, cooking equipment, shoes plus much more. They have shops around the country but as unfortunately I do not live near one I had to use the website.
I do a fair bit of internet shopping but am always wary with sites that are new to me so did a bit of research and they seemed to be reliable and efficient, adding tothe fact that they have shops too I went ahead and ordered through the site.
Firstly they have a huge range of products available, I am new to hiking and camping and they have many guides to help you select the correct type of equipment for you needs. I used this for tents and also clothing and learned quite a lot. The website is laid out very well and is easy to navigate which is always a good thing!
They have had many offers on lately with the change of seasons so have had a fair amount of bargains available and I log on frequently to find a change in offers so the site is updated regulary and kept fresh.
I have since placed two orders, at first I was dubious as it states 7-10 working days for delivery but on both occasions it has arrived on the following working day. Both orders went through fine, the second was a bit of a problem as they didnt have an item in stock despite showing in on their site, so they offered me a newer, equilivent one which I was happy to take. I found that they kept contact throughout and so far I have not been let down.
I have subscribed to their emails and they have sent a promotional code through and constantly keep me updated on new offers which I like.
Overall I would really recommend this company and website as I have had no problems with them, the products represent great value for money, and they deliver very quickly.
