During the month of July the wrinklette (me) and the bride, decided that as they would be on their own from early August, given that the elder offspring was getting married and that the younger one would be returning to foreign parts, that they should get away from it all and have a break from all the hard work involved in preparing for a wedding. We looked around and with a certain amount of trepidation, we decided that a journey to the French Alps, with the box on wheels (caravan), in mid August would be acceptable, the only problem being that on previous sorties to foreign parts, the kids were thrown from the vehicle and instructed to obtain specific services, using their language’s learned in school, now that they were gone it was down to us. Undaunted we forged on and arranged ferry transport both across the Irish Sea and the English Channel. Accommodation was arranged through the Caravan Club, the necessary foreign money was arranged, everything was ready, or so I thought. Early one morning, I was awakened by a nudge and the words, “What route do we take when we get to France, have you got a map?” Struggling from my sleep I realised that a very valid point had been made and that the necessary arrangements were lacking. That morning, like a guiding star an envelope arrived from the Caravan Club, inside which were details of the sites we had booked and including a flyer for a firm called GRIP Maps Limited. An examination of this flyer showed that for a small fee this firm would provide the donor with a book of maps, highlighted with the best route, an estimate of the distance to travel and a motoring fact sheet all in a sturdy plastic wallet. Our intrepid traveller made us of the dog and bone, and spoke to a rather nice lady who explained that the person with who I needed to converse was in fact in communication with another person and would if I desired call me back, being the miserable sod that I am, I jum
ped at the chance of someone else paying for a national telephone call, and agreed. Within a short period I was contacted by Steve, who on hearing my dilemma assured me that there was no problem, I didn’t even have to try to give him the name’s in French, all I had to quote where the site numbers from the Caravan Club book, and he would do the rest. I came off the phone and went for a lie down to recover from the self implied stress prior to it. On the fourth day after the call a large envelope was delivered by the ever weary postman, and when it was opened, the contents were revealed as, a Michelin map book for France, with the relevant routes highlighted in pink, details of the journey lengths and times, details of the tolls on French Motorways, and a sturdy plastic wallet to keep them all in, I was well chuffed. All the hassle having been removed from the holiday, we set sail and had a great time thanks in no small part to GRIP Maps, because of their help we cruised to each of our resting places and have returned refreshed, eager to set off again on another adventure.
