Advantages: Good initial fun

Disadvantages: Gets boring, Basic chat works better

Habbohotel has jumped on the internet ‘Chat’ bandwagon and is one of a new breed, offering greater interactivity, like everything it seems.

So is it any good?

***WHAT IS ‘HABBOHOTEL?***

‘Habbohotel’ funnily enough is a hotel where ‘habbos’ can come any stay/visit. Sounds funny doesn’t it, but in principle it’s a good idea, and many will be excited by the idea.

‘Habbo’s’ are the inhabitance of the hotel, which is displayed in a drawn out, sort of shockwave presentation. These little inhabitance are what you, the people who wish to chat to other people. You take on the role of a ‘Habbo’ which is displayed as a little person in the hotel.

***THE HOTEL***

The hotel consists of a number of different rooms, all in which are visit able by your representation in the hotel, your little habbo. There are rooms such as;

A dance room,
A Restaurant,
Bedrooms
Washrooms,
Bars,
Pubs etc.

Basically all the rooms that you would expect in a large hotel.

***NAVIGATION***

Navigation in the hotel is done very easily by the use of your mouse. A single click and point systems enables the user to direct their little ‘Habbo’ anywhere the wish in the hotel.

***TALKING/CHATTING***

As this is basically on big chat room, there is a large provision for chatting in the hotel, well that is the whole point isn’t it. The is a basic chat bar at the bottom where you can basically get your habbo to say, well he doesn’t actually say it, come on it’s not that good. Anyway it appears as text in a bubble coming from your habbo’s mouth, habbo’s which are close can read it, others the far away will be able to read the message just, or no at all,( it appears with parts of the sentence missing). You can also select to just chat to one person, by clicking on them
an selecting ‘Whisper’.

***ANY BAD POINTS?***

As the whole ‘Hotel’ thing is set in a hotel environment (Obviously) then this program is rather hefty in size. Meaning that fist of all you have to download shockwave (10 mins) and install it the go to the habbo hotel site (http:/www.habbohotel.com). Then you have to download the hotel data and it’s status with the users in it currently. This also takes a while, and annoyingly it takes 10 minutes on 56k modem each time you want to chat.

The basic point of the hotel to the company that runs it is to make some money, through advertising and ‘Habbo’ credits. These credits can be bought by sending them a text message costing about 50p to you. You can use these credits to by drinks and gain access to other rooms. This is in my opinion a complete waste of money, don’t even bother.

***SUMMARY***

This site on first sighing, seemed a brilliant idea, being able to interact and chat with you mates, sort of in person. While it would be nice seeing all your mates round a table in the bar in the hotel, I soon got bored.

With the hefty loading times and lag between switching rooms, I have to say that I prefer the original chat method. Just real time text works just as well, just without the fancy bits which just frustrate anyway.

So if that’s you thing, you can you any anyone you wish in to a virtual bed, hence the title.

TIME WASTING AND FRUSTRATING; why alter a concept that already works well?

Hey, firstly drinks are free, and secondly, Habbo was made not for profit, they just make money to keep it going. Habbo was made purely for fun, like any good chat room. And other chat rooms are SOOOO boring compared to Habbo.
