A while ago I was using an outlook express account which is my parents account to send and receive emails. This proved to be a bad idea when all my mail was being read by whoever signed into the account first, so I decided I wanted my own email account. Unable to figure out how to do this with outlook express, I started searching online. I needed something free, since I was only about 12 at the time, but also something that worked and was easy to use. Eventually, I found hotmail which offers all this.
Hotmail is a free email service by Microsoft which has been around for a while but has recently been updated to Windows Live Hotmail. When you sign up you choose your own username which is then used as your email address in front of @hotmail.com (or .co.uk depending on which site you sign up on). Your email account is then accesible from the hotmail homepage where you sign in with the address and your password. It's a simple layout to use once you're signed in - along the left of the screen you have different places to go like the Inbox where incoming mail is stored, Junk where spam is filtered into, Drafts where you can save messages you haven't finished typing, Sent where you can view messages you've already sent and Deleted, where any deleted messages are stored before you get rid of them completely by emptying this box. There's a search bar at the top which can be used either to search your mail (maybe if you need to find a confirmation email for example) or to search the web. Below that are several options to do with managing yout emails like New, Delete and Junk. You get 5GB of mail storage, which is huge - I have just over 900 emails (lazyness!) and that's only used up 1% of the storage capacity.
You can also customise your the display by changing the background colour of the screen and by rearranging the position of different sections such as the message box, which can be below the list of messages which is where I find it most convienent as you can still see the list for quick access to emails and you can read them at the same time. One disadvantage about the service is the junk mail box as it seems to organise just any message into here and only keeps it for a week before automatically deleting it, so you really need to check this when you sign in in case something important has gone into it. I've noticed that while it puts sometimes important mail into the junk box, it leaves spam in the inbox. However you can change that by clicking the junk mail icon when you click a spam email. Other than that, this service is excellent. It's available to sign into 24/7 unless there are maintenance problems which doesn't happen often and your hotmail address can be used to sign into msn messenger on any computer.
Hotmail saves as many contacts names, addresses and other details in your contacts page and there's also a calendar for reminders of important dates. When you first sign in, you also get some news headlines displayed before going to your inbox which you can click on to find out more about. The new Live version is basically an update of the older version, which I believe is also still available if that's what you prefer, but I would recommend this version as there are more options and it's much easier to read and access your mail.
Overall, this is in my opinion the best online email service available. Hotmail offers quality service that's reliable and easy to use, and it's free! Since you can use it on any computer with internet access I think it's well worth having a hotmail account. I've been using this as my only email account for serveral years now and it just gets better and better!
