Advantages: Free and very easy to use
Disadvantages: Not compatable with Outlook
Hotmail is a very popular email client provided free of charge by Microsoft. It is widely used and easy to set up, you choose a email address that is available, enter a password and some personal details and then bam...you have your own web post box.
It has loads of room to store you emails (I have never filled mine) and a fairly good junk mail filter, this can sometimes be a little over zealous but it has the best intentions for you.
With Windows Live Hotmail the interface is changable depending on your tastes adding a nice personal touch, and you can also add signatures. The main problem with (free) Hotmail is that it is not compatable with MS Outlook, (however it is with Mozilla Thunderbird) which is only a function available on the premium version, however for most people this won't be an issue and it will not affect their email experience.
I have used Hotmail for about 5 years now but am currently moving over to Yahoo, which I think is more user friendly. It really os down to taste and Hotmail is a very good all round client.
Summary: Very good popular email client, shame about no outlook though
