Advantages: Easy to use, free and can be accessed from anywhere. Lots of storage.

Disadvantages: Some junk mail

I've been using Hotmail since back in the day. I signed up while at uni in the late 90s as my friends had accounts and you we didn't want to clog up our uni accounts with personal emails.

The service is easy enough to set up, taking only a few minutes. You can choose your own name as long as it isn't taken, along with a .com or .co.uk extension.

The amount of storage you get from the basic service is fine, I usually keep my inbox quite clean, but my girlfriend doesn't but she still hasn't used up the allowance of space you're given.

Having a hotmail account also gives you access to the Windows Live website and you can use your login details to access a whole raft of features on there.

The only trouble with having a hotmail account is that you tend to get a bit of spam as it's a surefire was for phishers and spammer to try and get into people's inbox. You do have junk mail filters and can block senders, but it's a price you pay for using a main provider of web-based email.

The added bonus of web-based email is that you obviously access your account anywhere in the world by visiting the Hotmail website.

All in all, I've been using Hotmail in one way or another for over 10 years, which kind of speaks for itself. Definitely one to consider if you're looking for easy to use web mail.
