Advantages: A fun way to waste a few minutes

Disadvantages: Some of the ratings are very odd!

I was first introduced to this site a few years ago when I was still in school. Some of the guys in my year would run off to the computer room at every given opportunity, and I eventually found that it was because they were rating hotties on this site! It was ages before I actually visited the site myself, but when I did it was a mixture of boredom and curiosity that led me there.

The basic premise of the site is that members upload photos of themselves to the site to be rated by other members based on how 'hot' they think that person looks. You can upload any photo you wish, but before it is posted to the site it has to be checked by site moderators to make sure that it's actually of a person, not a celebrity, and not obscene. However, despite this moderation process, there are many obscene photos on there, as well as pictures of lesser-known celebrities.

Once your photo has been uploaded and approved you need to go rate other people's photos in order to get ratings on your own. The more people you rate, the more ratings you will get. The rating process is simple. A photo is displayed with a 1-10 scale above it, 10 being Hot and 1being Not, and you just click on the relevant number to give your rating. Once you've rated a photo, it brings up a new one to be rated, but it also displays the overall rating of the photo you've just rated at the left hand side, so you can see how it compares to how you rated them.

Whilst I was initially quite curious about what rating I would get on my photo, seeing my own rating is not what provides the entertainment for me on this site. For me it is much more interesting seeing what lengths people go to to try to get a good score. A very high percentage of the girls have figured out that the best way to get a high score (regardless of what they actually look like) is to show as much boob as possible, preferably in a seductive pose, whilst for the guys it's flashing their abs (or lack of) in front of a mirror.

As well as just the rating part of the site, Hot or Not has a Meet People section where you can build a profile and tell people a little about yourself and what you're looking for. Once you have your profile you can start clicking Yes or No to people, based on whether you would like to meet them. If you click yes to someone that has also clicked yes to you, you can then contact them through the website. I am not personally interested in this part of the site, but there are many testimonials from satisfied users.

Overall I think as long as you treat this site as a bit of fun and don't obsess over your score, it's as good a way as many to waste a few minutes a day, and you could find it gives you a right old giggle at some of the scary-looking people who've been given ratings of 9 and above, or some of the uber-vain people who frequent the site!

Summary: Will cure your boredom for a while

Sounds a bit like 'Hot, Cute or Okay' on Facebook. V addictive.
