To write a good games review requires much the same as writing a good review or opinion about anything. There is much that you should include, notably facts about what you're writing about - useful information regarding the product or service, but try always to remember that it's your review, therefore use your style of writing, include your own opinions, and basically try to persuade the reader that your view counts, and they might then share that view upon what your reviewing. For games, it is a good idea to divide your review into sections; this breaks the page up, making it easier to read, and the reader can skip sections that they feel they already know about. For instance, if you're reviewing a game, you might want to give a brief introduction about it, telling the reader what it basically is. You could then go on to speak about the graphics, sound, longevity, presentation, target audience of the game, and of course the all important gameplay factor. I would recommend writing a paragraph for each section. Although it is easier to read when larger texts are split up, don't pre-script everything. Reviews need life and a certain level of vibrancy, most importantly; they need to be in your style. There is the off chance that you will want to become a journalist, professional reviewer, or even something like a food critic, if people get used to a style, and they like it, they'll want to keep on coming back for more. Obviously spelling is important, grammar is too, use word if you're unsure about anything. Liven your review up with complex and exciting vocabulary - "This game has great graphics" - sure, there's nothing wrong with that, it's probably a true statement, but "Nothing compares to the incredible visuals found in this title" might sound a little better, although don't over exaggerate the situation too much... Make your review flow, so that it's easy to read, bu
t also entertaining, you'll find that if you're using interesting language, then you'll have more fun in writing it. Make sure you know what you're talking about too - you can tell when people have simply read a couple of other reviews about a subject and tried to conclude their own opinion on it, without knowing anything about it other than the views of other people. If you follow up your own opinions by a fact then your writing will seem a lot more convincing. After you've talked about the main elements of the game, you could brief the reader on how original it is, what you've discovered through playing it, and give some comparisons to market leaders, e.g. "..Wipes the floor with Gran Turismo 3...", as the reader may be more familiar with such titles. I think that's about all I can say on this, naturally you can only give a score of 1-5 on the Dooyoo rating, but if you want to rate each area (i.e. Graphics 5, Sound 3, Gameplay 4...) then there's no harm in that at all. Thanks for reading, I've probably contradicted myself many times, but I genuinely hope that you may have found this review helpful. VOODOO MAN

- 08/04/02 This doesn't really say anything more than a normal "How to write..." opinion. Perhaps you should ask Dooyoo to move it to this, more general, category. |
