How To Write A Good Music Review

Advantages: a good review

Disadvantages: none

Music reviews are an interesting category, because music is so subjective. I know this is an opinion site, and therefore it's looking for people's opinion, but when it comes to music I think 'other people's opinions' count for very little. With that in mind, there are some dos and don'ts that I think everyone will appreciate:

DO:
1) Give us a little background about the artist - the discerning music fan will want to know where they are from and their age and sex. It isn't everything, but it is something.

2) Explain the genre or style of the music - this isn't always accurate, because again some people's ideas of a certain artist are different to others, but a bit of information about the general style and vibe of the music would be good.

3) Tell us who they are similar to - this is surely the big one, and the most helpful way of finding out about whether or not you will like the music.

4) Give an overview of the length of / number of tracks on the album, highlighting perhaps the best track, the worst track, and any tracks that have been in the charts/films etc that we may recognise.

5) Tell me where you bought it, and what you paid. That way, the comments box can be used if someone finds it cheaper. A lot of obscure music is hard to find, so this often overlooked information could be really helpful.

DON'T:
1) Give a review of every track. For me, there are a lot of people who do this because they're afraid their review is going to be too short without it. However, very few people manage to write interesting reviews this way. Why not just highlight the best and worst of the album?

Summary: do it!

Good advance for writers.
I'm a music critic, myself.

I don' always need a biography of the band unless it affects their music. glasvegas or the View for example who do have strong singing accents.
I'm not one for full track by track reviews with marks out of ten for each but a track by track can be done more subtly.

Cost is and purchase is not so important apart from rare or older suff

Agree with most of this - nothing is more tedious than a track by track review that says not much more than "I like this one"! Personally I don't find price that useful for mainstream albums but it's definitely useful for more obscure stuff.
