The Hollywood Stock Exchange (HSX) is one of the longest running websites on the Internet and has been around since 1996. It is a subsidiary of Cantor Index which in turn is part of Cantor Fitzgerald, a leading financial services provider, that also tragically lost around 700 employees on 9/11. Basically the Hollywood Stock Exchange gives you the chance to invest money (calm down - its only imaginary money) in movies. When you register (this only takes a couple of minutes) you are given $2 million Hollywood dollars. Using this money you can buy shares in movies, stars or options. Stock prices on movies are based on the estimated box office of a film in its first 3 weeks of opening (ie: $10 means it is estimated to take $10 million). I finally decided to join HSX, I realised it would be a mistake which is why I'd stalled for so long. I'm glad I did, the game is great, but it takes up too much time!! The idea is you are given $2 million dollars (Hollywood dollars not real ones!!) to invest in current and upcoming films and movie stars, yes you can really own a piece of Cameron Diaz's swirling...... The prices go up and down just like real stocks according to popularity and according to the real markets when the film is released, it really is a horribly addictive game watching those dollars rise and fall.
