Advantages: Saves all those phone calls and letters and it's FREE!

Disadvantages: Not yet universally accepted - so you may still need to let some people know, including your Window Cleaner!

IHaveMoved.com

[Background: The theory goes something like this . . . register with IHaveMoved.com and they will let selected companies know that you are moving house, taking away the need for you to do all the work, and giving you time to concentrate on important matters like packing up your valuable belongings]

Most people only move once every five or ten years, but when the time comes, the experience is usually a traumatic one.

Not any more. Now you can surf along to IHaveMoved.com (not surprisingly found at: www.ihavemoved.com) and let them sort things out for you. They aim to provide an important service to you the housemover, by enabling you to easily inform a wide variety of companies that you are moving house, without the need for lots of phone calls and letters.

In addition, companies can benefit too by using the information that IHaveMoved.com collect, in order to stay in touch with their customers. This saves money for them by not having to employ as many customer services staff to speak to you when you need to inform them that you are moving, and also in terms of the millions of items that are sent out each year to customers who have 'goneaway' (the technical term used within the direct marketing industry for individuals that have moved house).

The full list of categories you can inform about your impending move is as follows:

- Charities
- Clubs/ Memberships
- Electricity
- Financial Services
- Gas
- Gyms & Health Clubs
- Home Oil (?)
- Local Councils
- Mail Order & Home Shopping
- Store Cards & Loyalty Cards
- Subscriptions
- Telecoms
- Television & TV Licence
- Trades Unions
- Travel
- Universities & Alumni Associations
- Water

This list appears to be very impressive at first glance, although the service is by no means an industry standard yet, so
you may find that you cannot use the site to let everyone know about your move.

However, the service, if used properly, could well make what used to be a chore into a relatively painless exercise.

Unfortunately, I did not know about this service when I moved house last year, and I had to inform all the relevant companies who I deal with about the move using more traditional methods.

So next time you're moving on to pastures new, give IHaveMoved.com a try and save yourself a lot of grief.

A-ha but the benefit of IHaveMoved.com is that YOU choose who you want to tell and those who you don't!

(But I wonder how many window cleaners don't get paid when people move house?)
