Advantages: brilliant search function and valuable filmographies
Disadvantages: discussion boards can contain useless discussions
IMDB is the one stop port for all movie and television knowledge. It allows you to become a member and keep track of your favourite movies and TV shows as well as rate and review them. The 'Now Playing' section of the site is extremely useful when trying to decide which films are must-sees with a quick synopsis of the plot, cast photos, trailers and reviews to help you quickly get a feel for the movie.
Another amusing use of the website is the ability to look up 'Goofs' for certain movies or shows for those special moments when either the writers or actors got it oh so very wrong, either purposefully or by accident.
The use of the message boards to share opinions can be a bit hit and miss. There are some clearly intellectual and funny discussions by registered users. Inevitably though, there are some that discuss things such as the lead female's breasts and the amazing 'hotness' of actors. This mind-numbingly degenerate topics should be saved for those fansites and shared with other people who don't mind seeing the word 'hot' used 17 times in one paragraph.
Its search function is a godsend when trying to figure out who that elusive actor is in the movie that you're currently watching. You know that you've seen him before but for the life of you cannot remember where. You can search by the usual expected criteria such as the movie name, but also impressively using character names. For me the actor filmographies are therefore the most useful function of this site and can help you find those movies that are not blockbuster hits but still have a brilliant actor in them.
So go to IMDB for a comprehensive movie and TV database that is easy, accessible and fun.
