A friend of ours has just introduced me to the somewhat strange delights of knowhere.co.uk, and if ever you're really bored then it's worth a look. Probably doing more harm than good to the local tourism trade, the site is basically full of very UN edited opinions about places in the UK. There are various categories, such as meeting places, pubs & clubs, places to eat, places to shop etc etc and is compiled by the people who live there, used to live, have passed through or have a vague connection with the place. If you can put up with the bad language, incredibily poor grammar and some out-and-out incitement of violence, then some of it is quite a giggle. I wouldn't recommend it to the serious traveller but if you've moved away from your home town then it's quite a laugh to read about what's changed (or hasn't as the case maybe). Just take a look at sme of the entries for Stoke-on-Trent and you'll get a good idea on what the site is about. I'll warn you now that the content leaves a lot to be desired as like I've said it's unedited, so you're free to write exactly what you like.....and people have done.
A very unconventional tourist(?) guide for the U.K. It is written by people who actually(supposedly) live in the area. Anyone can add to the website with relevant info about a town/city. It does have a very comprehensive list of places. I checked out the section on Washington(naturally, where I live) and there are a few different sections,Inside Info - not particulary usefull but it was mildly amusing; Entertainment which lists pubs, clubs etc., with opinions on each one; Events- wasn't anything listed!; Shops; Other Stuff, such as famous residents; Notice board, contact long lost friends. Some of the info I found was ok, some a complete waste of time, and some, which looked as if written by kids included swearing, so I don't think there is much control over this site. it's a very basic, ugly looking site, which potentially could be extremely useful, but it needs more control. It does have a links page to the more convential tourist guides. I am unsure of how to rate this site, so I would suggest having a look and writing your thoughts on the site. Like I say it does have the potential for usefulness, as anyone can add to the site, but until they get more control, that is also a disadvantage to this site. I look forward to reading what others think about this site
