Repeated films I do not love

I have never been a dedicated film goer but since hubby declared that I never sit down with him and just "chill" (with 3 children?!), I decided to give this a go. This would give us some quality time and the winter nights would fly in the frozen wastelands of the North!
So, being the kind of person easily seduced by free trials, I duly signed up. So far so good.

The "biggest and best" onlind dvd rental in Europe.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Quite simple in theory.
you sign up online and get 14 days free trial then choose from over 46000 titles. How many? That's a lot of films and lovefilm boasts that it's virtually every dvd available in the uk and almost 5 times the amount available in the average video store. After browsing through the selection, I could quite believe this, with all genres catered for, including children, drama, new releases, martial arts, sports etc, and if their promise that they had over 1000 copies of the most popular films in stock, then surely I would get my choices fairly quickly (wouldn't I?)
You rent as many dvds or games as you want for a flat monthly fee and keep the films for as long as you want; when you have finished watching the film, you put it in the postage paid envelope and when they receive it, your next film is posted to you. There are no late fees, free postage both ways and no obligations or minimum contract, meaning that you are free to cancel at any time.
This all sounded ideal, so all I had to do was select a tarrif and watch those films!
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
There are several packages to choose from: Classic 1, 1 disc at a time and 14 days free trial for £9.99 a month; Classic 2 for 2 discs and 14 days free trial at £12.99 a month and Classic 3 for 3 discs at a time and 14 days free trial for £14.99 a month. There are also film, and game rentals, (for Playstation 2 consoles and PSP) Combination 1,2 and 3, allowing you that number of discs, all with 14 days free trial and priced from £122.99 a month to £19.99 a month.
With the Combination packages, you can rent either all games, all films or a combination of the two, and watch as many films or play as many games as you want for the whole month.
The free trial allows you to "give it a go" and if you are not entirely happy, you ensure all of the discs are returned before the trial end and won't have a penny to pay. If you love lovefilm, you don't do anything, just sit tight and wait for the discs to arrive.
I chose Classic 3 to ensure that everyone got a turn at choosing the dvds. I wanted a good selection so that there was something for the 4 year old to watch as well as the teenagers and ourselves, so when I had chosen the films, I numbered them...fairy/princess film, "grown up" dvd, fairy/princess film etc. What I really didn't want was 3 fairy princess films, disgruntled hubby and teenage boys!
WHAT DID I GET?
I joined in September at for the first 3 weeks, all was rosy in the Lovefilm garden. I chose the films, they sent them to me, we watched them, returned them, and got new ones.
After about 8 films, things started to go horribly wrong, so much so that my eldest found it quite hilarious that "mum, they are sending you all the rubbish no one else wants cos they know you don't know anything about films". This was true. At first, I started receiving films not on my list which was sort of ok because we could watch and rate them as useless and then get on with it. A bit of a waste of money but not too bad. A couple of weeks into this, I e mailed them to inform them that I would like something from my list, which they started to do...repeatedly. I would receive a film, return it, and on the day it had been returned, receive an e mail "Great news, we have posted your new title...Black Beauty/Amelie/Sindy" NOT such great news when that was the film I had watched the night before. We even spent some weeks with duplicate dvds in the house. Complaining did nothing to deter them...they kept those duplicates coming at a rapid rate!
This happened for about 6 weeks before I decided that it would be cheaper and more sensible to join the video store...if only I wasn't so lazy.
When you want to cancel, you have to telephone and let them know, to ensure you give them an explanation. This allows them to try to get you to stay with them by offering 3 days free rental (3 days?).
I still don't know if my membership has been cancelled as I continue to receive e mails from them and I have no faith whatsoever that it will be done without many e mails going backwards and forwards...I wait to see what happens when the credit card bill arrives.
I certainly would not recommend them but, undeterred, am trying out another online dvd rental website...so far so good.
I won't be sending anyone lovefilm gift subscriptions; if they want to watch the same dvd over and over again I will buy them a dvd.
However, if you want a great selection of dvds they are worth a go; hopefully your experience would be more positive than mine.
