Advantages: Quick, reliable great service
Disadvantages: Not sure it caters for all genres
Lovefilm is an online DVD/Blu-ray hire facility. You pay a monthly subscription, add movies to your rental list and Lovefilm send them to your home.
We pay £3.91 per month, it used to be £3.99 but thanks to the VAT cut I can wisely use my 8p elsewhere. We started using the service last year following a heavy bout of advertising and the realisation that we were missing out on loads of good movies, cinemas are expensive and there are normally two or three a month that grab our interest. Also we got rid of Sky to save some pennies so no longer had the luxery of on demand, box office specials so this seemed like a good consolation prize. On Quidco at the moment you get £15 cashback for genuine new registration and completion of the free trial.
**The free trial**
We gave this a whirl and for two weeks experienced the great service Lovefilm provides. If after two weeks its not your bag or your just doing it for the cashback you really can leave with no penalty. You do have to enter your card details as clearly this would be a nice scam for people to get two DVD's for nothing.
**Membership**
So you enjoyed the free trial?? More than you thought you would? We did too! It was so easy and so nice to have something different to watch whenever we fancied. Lovefilm advertise that they have 65,000 titles and they are not just limited to film rental but also games. I will be keeping this solely movie focused but I imagine they deliver equally as well on the game side.
We use the cheapest package which allows us two DVD's a month and only one at home at a time. To upgrade your package and receive 3 per month it is £5.87 a month and to have 4 per month is £7.82. There is also an unlimited package which allows as many DVDs as you want in a month but as long as you only have one at a time, this is £9.78 per month and always makes me think of film students. This would be a fantastic going away to university gift if you know any budding actors/film makers.
For us 2 a month is plenty, at first we thought it wouldn't be but we find we get side tracked with life and it can be three weeks before we even watch one!
**The Website**
Your membership is managed through the website. On the website you have to build your 'rental list' it is off your rental list that Lovefilm select titles and send them out to you. Sometimes, and especially for new and popular releases there is a short wait. To find a film I often browse through most popular and just select the ones I know I've missed. My other half is more selective, compiling lists of classics and must-sees then adding them. We currently have over 60 titles waiting and LoveFilm recommend 20.
You can prioritise your rentals as well. We have everything sitting at low and as soon as we fancy one in particular up its priority and have always received this as our next rental next time around, very handy when I fancy something a little more girly and fire Sex and the City to the top of the list....sneaky!
The website is easy to use and features reviews if you need more information.
**Why I love the Service**
Its reliable. I have no been with them for a year and consistently it works. I post my DVD's back on a Monday, they are received on a Tuesday and I have a new set by Thursday (im fairly sure this would be Wednesday but our postie cant always access our flat). Its so exciting coming home to see you little Lovefilm package and provided you haven't checked your emails which tell what movie your getting you get a nice surprise!
There really are no late fees either, I was always dubious of this claim but we have sat for over a month with a DVD and not received so much as an email making sure we hadn't skipped the country! You can also rent box sets which are split into three episodes per disc.
The envelopes your DVD arrives in is the envelope you send it back in, they make it so simple to return them and the envelope has clear instructions on how to contact them if you have any problems.
**Problems?**
None as far as I can see but potentially if your into a certain genre, or obscure types of films they may not feature them.
All in all they deliver what they claim to and for that it gets 5 stars
Summary: For main stream movie lovers this is a must!

- 17/08/09 I've used them for well over a year, and have been really happy with them - they have even supplied me with obscure foreign language films... |

- 13/08/09 Have just joined this after reading lots of positive reviews and got our first disc today, I think 2 a month is all we are going to need as I haven't got time to watch telly as I am always on here! x |

- 13/08/09 Your right about the spontaneous factor! I still enjoy my impulse DVD purchases from Tesco and alike :) |
