Advantages: Prizes to be won, Word of the Day and a superb dictionary / thesaurus

Disadvantages: Double barrel name!

Merriam-Webster is an online dictionary and thesuarus that I regularly use not just to check spelling but to learn new words and as I give private lessons in English to foreigners, I like to provide them with 10 new words per lesson and when out of time, I simply peruse the archives of the websites "Word of the Day" section and quickly draw up ten words.

Merriam-Webster dates back to the mid 1800's when George and Charles Merriam secured the rights to the 1840 cersion Noah Webster's "An American Dictionary of the English Language" (1828) following his death. The company has been a subsidiary of Britannica Encyclopaedia since 1964. These days as well as the printed versions, the website is regularly used and bursts with daily features such as a daily crossword, word games and a daily podcast.

Merriam-Webster.com doesn't confine itself to an English dictionary or thesaurus but also acts as a Spanish-English dictionary and a Medical dictionary. For the complete brain box the National Spelling Bee Hive should be of interest, this offers some seriously huge prizes for those succesful in competitions.

Without a doubt the best online dictionary.
