How many times have you performed a search only to have pages and pages of American drivel? i find this the most infuriating of all but am pleased to say that Mirago is a UK search engine that only lists UK sites. So far, I have found precisely what I have been looking for in a fraction of the time. Also as an added bonus, you can have the latest news headlines, the weather, you name it! Although you may find that you spend your time surfing through their pages instead of what you were originally looking for!
Mirago is a great UK-based search engine. But it looks more like an ISP homepage. I was so impressed I made this my homepage. I started using Mirago as a source for UK TV listings. Each program has a link this can be linked either to a TV website for the programme or a related website with information about the TV programme's subject or content. The Home page is organised like one you would expect from an ISP that boasts great content. Below the search boxes are News, Business, Entertainment and Sport Headlines followed by a what's on TV now and you can switch between the five UK terestial channels. You can also tune the TV listings to give you local listings for your area. East, South East etc. Another boon to the net novice is links tutorials, web page design and a jargon buster for those not so technically-minded net users. So impressed with Mirago am I that I would recommend you set your browser's homepage to mirago.co.uk for a week and you will never go back to your old homepage.
THe pure joy of not having to look at reams of USA based Interent Sites is what makes Mirago one of my favourite search engines. The front page leaves a lot to be desired, with only a tiny search window, low down on the left-hand side of the screen. However, things get considerably more interesting when it returns your first search results. It lists the most relevant pages first and it is nearly always right on the beam. Making the list of sites returned even easier to view, there is a tick-box which gives you only one page per site, this simplifies things and lets you get to the most interesting sites that much quicker. Even the poor first page has one thing in its favour and that is the facility to search shopping/sports and other specialists pages first and fast.
I came on to Dooyoo the other day to see if I could find a good UK search engine. I saw that Mirago.co.uk had not had any reviews written about it so I thought I would go and check it out. I am so glad I did. The few searches I put in came back very fast, and were very relevant. It listed the UK sites first, even though I didn't ask it to; it made a refreshing change not to have to wade through a load of American sites before you get to any UK ones. The searches that came back were also very relevant. On most search engines you have to wade through a pile of rubbish and irrelevant Web sites before you actually find what you were looking for, but this did not happen on the Mirago.co.uk. When you do your search there is also a box which you can check which means you only get one result per Web site, for example, the first 10 searches that come back aren't all different pages on the same Web site. This is definitely the best UK search engine I have used so far, and I think I have tried nearly all of the others. I will definitely be using Mirago.co.uk as my main search engine from now on.
